I'm going to buy a NAS (probably an enclosure and separate SATA disks)
    - any recommendations?

Which HDs are considered the "least dodgy" these days?

  2. No - but when you find one let me know. I have a grand plan to replace
the 3 servers in my spare room at home with a single server (running
Xen or something equivalent) and a NAS box.

I use a Snapserver 4500 here - it's very good but noisy and expensive.
I've never had a problem with Maxtor..

They're all a bit dodgy, innit, especially on the "gay as ****" front.
And even the latest ones are still dog slow.

IME Seagates, as they're the only ones, AFAIK, that come with a 5 year
warranty - so it stands to reason they might last a bit longer heh. Also,
I've never had one die, whereas I have with most of the other brands. Just
    don't get Maxtor basically...

this is for my house - an enterprise class box might be a little OTT.
I was thinking of something more along the lines of this:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/135155
OK, I'll go with Seagate then, as they've always been good for me.

  10. Some of the new family of big Seagate SATA drives are "dropping" on a
regular basis, which is why we've never used them.

Maxtor are owned by Seagate now, their desktop drives have been below par
since they started out as Maxtor, being bought out; hasn't improved their
    reliability.

For a solid enterprise class SATA drive you can't go wrong with the new HGST
    "A7K1000" drives.

    Available in 500GB / 750GB & 1TB , all feature 32Mb Cache, NCQ, 1.2M hrs
    mtbf, & 5 Year Warranty.

I'm running a linksys NSLU2 which is a tiny little thing you can hang
two USB disks off. Haning off are a USB enclosure I got off ebay and a
USB enclosure I got from maplins.

Seems OK, runs silently and gives the family easily acessible storage.

No, Maxtor = Seagate. Seagate bought Maxtor - unfortunately, as someone
else in this thread confirms, Maxtor still blow goats.

Whichever one you choose, search for reviews detailing its transfer
    speed.

I got what looked like a good one for last place I worked. Transfer
speed was crap, which I'd found if I'd gone further than the first 5
    reviews I read.
