I have the golliwog on a motorbike pinned to the lapel of the old Wolf
leather jacket I bought in 1979, alongside a Tufty club badge

Indeed. Now google it plus suitable words to give it an American
context with regard to race relations.

There have, sadly, been a couple of cases in the USA IIRC where that
word has caused offence (and a lot of publicity) to people who were
    not aware of the etymology.

It seems to me that the context has to be taken into account.
Otherwise presumably the Robinsons "golliwogs" could never be
    advertised as such.

    That doesn't surprise me.
The context, maybe - ignorance, never.

  9. That seems to be creeping in - load of cock, imo. It's just an
abbreviation and it's their fault for having a long name, like so many
    others.
I think the current aversion to 'Jap' stems from the perjorative way it
was used in the US and the UK during and after the war - not a lot of
love lost there, I'm sure, and quite rightly so.

  11. "Working like a black."
I've only ever heard it used it in a complimentary fashion - ie, working
bloody hard shovelling stuff or simply grafting away. An ex-Zimbabwean
of my acquaintance had another take on it.

But then, in America, there are no black people...

It's an internet newsgroup, populated by computer nerds. What do you
    think?

It's never been a newsgroup of Dennis the Menace...

Or "blacking" - eg "I've been blacking away this afternoon."

I heard myself say this just last week: "play the white man"

I never thought about it before but of course it is distinctly un-PC.

I suppose "chalk" is ok, as long as it's not used as an inappropriate
    nickname.

Dear old Vic Guha[1] had exactly the same rant at someone at a cricket
    match some years back.

[1] Vivek, but everyone called him Vic. Mad as a hatter, worked for
the Pru' for years, then retired "home" to Calcutta. Or whatever it's
called nowadays. Flew back the following year for our Sussex Tour, cos
he hadn't missed one for 25 years.
