So phone someone in the UK and pay extra for Euro-Post.
    Not that hard, is it?

  3. Not hard, no. Assuming I know who to phone. What's much easier though, is
ask here if anyone has one in their shed spare. If not, someone else
might pop up and say "these guys in <anytown> are good. Give them a call".

When I said "can't get one in Spain", this might equally have been "can't
get one in Scotland" ie; it looks like they might be thin on the ground.

At least the other reply suggested a dealer - albeit in the US.

Looks like I'll do it the "not hard" way then, and try and find a dealer
who a: has one, b: will post it here and c: can be trusted.

    Thanks for your help.

Try contacting the vendor for this (didn't sell)

  5. Is this the relay that handles the starter motor as well as one or two
otherthings (ISTR the same unit drives the indicators)?

And is his problem a non-functioning starter motor?

If so, this is a common fault on these bikes and it happened on a Yam
FZ750 I bought as a magazine project bike many moons ago.

For the starter, you can by-pass the relay with a wire run from the
battery. Note that this makes the starter circuit permanently live -
press the button, even with the ignition off, and it'll spin the engine
    - but the bike still won't start as the ignition circuit is disabled
until you turn on the key.

Worth checking out - it worked for me. Obviously, only if the problem is
    as I outlined, mind.

Cheers. I had seen that, but didn't know it hadn't sold. Seems a bit odd,
says PayPal accepted on the ad, but then says winning bidder has to phone
him with credit card details. Also says UK only, so perhaps he's not
prepared to send it abroad. I've emailed him anyway.

  7. Eleven pins, so I think it controls just about lots. I believe that the
problem is with the fuel pump. He thinks running out of fuel may have
    caused the problem.

  9. Running out of fuel would not have fritzed the relay. Trust me. Far more
likely that the fuel pump has gone AWOL, but even so, running out of
    fuel wouldn't do that.

I'd check the pump by running a direct feed to it.

  10. If he won't, I could buy it on my eBay account and post it.

  12. SD card -> FileZilla -> server. About 5 seconds. I suppose I should write
"anyone with dial-up connection, look away now".

  13. Thanks. I'm still awaiting a reply - and I'll talk to my friend tonight
about the suggestions and comments below ie; check fuel pump and relay.

  14. I'm going to dig out the schematic and attack the relay with my Avometer,
but matey reckons that the relay "pulses" the pump, the pump being a
simple solenoid and diaphragm, and said relay has ceased to "pulse". He
says if he puts power direct to the pump it clicks - same as if using the
relay. Sounds to me like the pump's had it. Could he be right about the
    "pulsing" thing?

  15. I really dunno. Leccy tech isn't my thing. I'd just have thought that if
you're running power to the pump and it is only clicking, that would
bean the pump is indeed FUBAR'd, but SWK will be along shortly.

On my 1988 vintage VFR, a simple solid state relay melted. Root cause was
    the solenoid based fuel pump.

The pump shouldn't click. The solenoid should actuate to suck in a load of
fuel which is then dispelled by pressure from a spring. Once the pump is
empty a sensor should be triggered to restart the cycle.

If the pump is clicking then I agree with you, it is probably shagged and
drawing loads of current trying to overcome the impairment.

  17. Hmm. Found the info on testing. Looks like a boggo relay (although the
picture makes it look like a normally closed relay).

    http://www.fzrarchives.com/fzr600/600_manual/

    But: http://paulc.es/relay.jpg

The instructions don't tally with the drawing (according to my brain).
They seem to have the meter and the battery the wrong way around. Seeing
as there is some resistance between 2 and 3, I can safely assume that
this is the coil windings? ie; the text is right and the drawing wrong.

  18. I think the key things here are a: the pump "clicks" when voltage is
applied directly, and b: the relay is nothing more than just that.

Conclusion: the bloke doesn't know what he's on about and the pump is
buggered. That's what I shall tell him in the pub tonight as I hand him
the diagrams and his relay and wash my hands of the affair. I'm afraid
these Spaniards do suffer from a tendency to know everything. Erm,
    present company and all that..

Thanks for all the input all. I've learned some stuff.
