Neil Mitchell "ban motorcycles".

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Andrew McDonald, Aug 13, 2004.

  1. Dont know how many of you heard Neil Mitchell yesterday but after that
incident with the speeding motorcyclist crashing after a short chase by the
police he called for a ban on motorcycles.

I've already rung the station this morning but they didnt put me through
because apparently he's not working today so wont be there to defend
himself. I'll try again on Monday.

So Ive been emailing the show and urge others to do so also.

    The email address is and

oh and remind him about the big crash in Seaford this morning, how about we
    ban all 4WD's ???

On the upside, such a comment clearly indicates the insightful level on
which this individual operates. Rather excitingly, we are surrounded by
such people, some of whom have access to microphones and transmitters.

    Delicious. :)

I presume this guy is on talk back radio? Do people still listen to that
shit? I thought that went out when everyone realised these guys were just
one big paid ad. Apparently not.

I suppose the rockapes in the population need something to fill in the day
    until Today Tonight comes on.

And while you are there, ask how his in-dash DVD/TV is going? He was
interviewed some time ago for the Drive section of the Age...he mentioned
that he watches TV on his way to work so that he can catch up with the
    latest news.

    dear Neil Mitchell,

I am a NSW Police Officer, and a Motorcyclist.

As ive been told, you are calling for a ban on motorcyclists because they
    are dangerious.

Since ive been a police officer, i have attended zero motorcycle accidents.
I have attended lots of car accidents and a fair few truck accidents.

Why dont we ban trucks while your at it. Ive seen a B double of around 25
tons slice through a rodeo like a knife through hot butter, surely this is
much more dangerous that 150kg's of motorcycle...

Perhaps we should also ban anything that could hurt us, knives, matches,
sharp edged books. Or even the psycological dangers such as advertising,
    heaven forbid.

While we are baning a minority group, perhaps we should start on different
races and sexual preferences, they are minority groups too.

Lucky your only incharge of a microphone and not a country.

    regards
    A concerned motorcyclist

  11. God save us from spelling and grammar witchhunters. Spelling only became
fixed (and a focus for the fixated) comparatively recently in the
history of the language. In the time of Queen Elizabeth I you could, and
she did, spell the same word different ways on the same page.

Technology is about to bring fluidity back to spelling as people search
for the shortest number of characters in which to send a quick text
message, so all the spelling teachers are going to be pulling out what's
    left of their hair.

Language change is constant and inevitable.

I actually think it would be a great idea to drop the apostrophe from
    the English language set.

Isnt it rather silly to keep using those confusing little marks? Arent
we ready to realise we dont need them? Wouldnt it be just as easy to
understand any message without them. Its a pity no one has realised that
the most common error in the English language (confusing it's and its)
would be eliminated overnight. The grocers apostrophe would disappear
(no more tomato's 50c), typing would be easier, publishing would be more
efficient and wed save on paper and ink.

Maybe we'd have to keep a couple like we'd not wed and I'll not Ill.

But the rest could go, no problem.

Words are a fairly simple way of communicating but spelling and grammar
rules for written English are complex and even experts trip up. There
are much more important things about a message than the way it is spelt,
and I've never had any trouble understanding Mad Biker.

Rant, rave, turn red, cough, jump off soap box, grab axe, destroy soap box.

Mad biker is griffith based policeman whose grammar is just as poor in
irc and we give him some gentle ribbing.
If that was the email he sent to Neil Mitchell what do you think eil
    will do?
Attack the policeman with the poor grammar.
Unfortunately whether you like it or not if you write a letter to a
radio station etc. then you should spell it correctly or you will be
made to look illiterate and not taken seriously.

Yes, and it has. To modern written English, which has set spelling.

It shouldn't matter how poor your spelling is as long as your
argument is sound. But in practice, it's like talking to someone
with a pair of underpants on your head ... people _will_ take
you at face value, and assume you're an gibbering idiot.

Well, that type of radio station, perhaps. When they can't attack the
substance, they attack the presentation. Usually keeps the knuckle
    draggers listening in giggling away...
