Just had a go on a new Honda CBF600S, faired, and really liked it. [1]

I'm also looking at a Fazer, ER6N and a Bandit but whatever I get, it'll
likely be a 600 and faired, even if only a bikini fairing, overall finances
    are limited ... ;)

I've done all my racing and stuff, I'm 5'4" short, developing a belly, and
have nackered knees, so 'R' versions and totally naked bikes are out, as are
cruisers(hideous things), and large trailies. All the above bikes seem fine
to me for riding reasonable distances (350 miles a day max) regularly once
maybe twice a month, 100 miles twice a week and shorter distances all the
time but still look OK for long-haul occasionally. Current car, a Landrover
Discovery, notches up about 22000 a year so I'm looking to cut a lot of this
mileage down, especially for many of the single person/unloaded journeys I
    now make. [2]

Any road up, what say the group, which is good/bad/unreliable/worth the
money/likely to cost shit-loads in three years etc. I haven't had a road
bike, indeed any bike, above about 25/30 bhp for a good few years now as I
ride off-road mostly in Trials, so have little clue about 'todays'
    bikes/tyres etc. [3]

Overall reliability is a key factor, running costs would also figure, but
high on my list is the ability to potter about and yet still occasionally
have a good blast, so decent handling is also a must, though I guess most
bikes these days will be way better than I was used to .. ;)

I reckon I'll buy new, but also up to two year old models would still be
attractive if they were low mileage and well-kept. Again, what would be the
    likely ad/disvantages of each?

    [1] I assume this is where the piss-takers might start ... ;)
[2] No, not divorced, just .. different priorities.
[3] It could be said I never had a clue anyway, but I still remember when
Avon Roadrunners were good tyres and the Pirelli ? Venom/Viper was the dogs
    bollocks.

There are plenty of good deals about on the Kawasaki Z750 / Z750S
(probably pick one up new for the same price as the lower capicity /
    lower powered ER6N / ER6F). I know it's not a fantastic looking
sportsbike, but it does rather well in the group tests that include some
of those you've mentioned above. Worth having a go on at least.

Paul - xxx emerged from their own little world to say
Of those, I'd pick the Honda. Just because I really liked them. The riding
position suits me and they are fun for short trips certainly.

I owned a CBR600 for 2 years. Whilst you can certainly ride long distances
on 600cc bikes they are quite tiring. You have to keep changing gears and
revving the tits off them to get the best out of them.

Your references to the olden days suggest you are getting on a bit. This
means that you should be able to run a much larger capacity bike for much
the same cost as a 600.

Therefore, consider the big brother versions of the bikes you list i.e.
CB900, Bandit 1200, FZR1000 etc. Also consider the big twins such as the
    SV1000, TDM900, Aprilia Falco & BMW boxers.

Have a ride on some of the larger cc bikes and compare them to the CB600.
They are so much nicer to live with for the type of riding you describe.

Try sitting on a V-Strom 650 - seat height might be an issue but I
reckon it would tick most of the other things you're looking for.

I notice that Suzuki have launched a V-Strom Touring and V-Strom Grand
    Touring Edition.

The difference between the two would appear to be the Grand Touring
editions hare £500 more and come with panniers and a top box. Thassit.

wessie came up with the following;:
Well, 46 ... but stopped racing and riding road bikes etc in 1994 ish.
I hadn't thought of it that way, or that being older might help with
insuirance etc, I just sort of thought 600's would be better suited. I'll
    try a couple though. :)

    Cheers.

Heated grips are standard on one of them too.

FWIW mine tours fine as is, but I think panniers would be good as I
still haven't figured out a way to get the soft ones on without them
    looking vaguely dangerous.

I'm also seriously considering getting the lower seat just for the trip
to France - or possibly bigger shoes.

Thing is it's £100 for something that means I will have a seat sitting
in the garage (as you can't 'trade' them in, or replace one with the
other when ordering new) so I feel a bit aggrieved about it.

Course I could just lower the suspension preload right down for the
boat and put it back up again on the other side :)
