I pick up an orange, 2003 Suzuki SV650s tomorrow. This will be
replacing my learner bike, a Kawasaki EL250. After being used to a bike
that has a comfortable maximum speed of 80km/h for 2 years, the 650 is
going to be pleasant to say the least. :-D

Just take care and make sure this is the only time you have to "pick it up".

Will do. I'm hardly a dare devil. I also test rode a GSX-R1000 and
damn near shat myself, hence why I've settled with the SV650. Figured
    I'd work my way up.

Why would you come off an EL250 and even entertain the thought of
    riding a 1000?

  5. A free ride's a free ride.

If Nastasia Kinsky was to wiggle her arse at you, you wouldn't reject the
opportunity just because she's not the kind of girl you'd personally choose
    to marry.

And how else would one be certain in themselves that a litre bike isn't for
them, unless they've had a chance to try?

IMWO no learner should get of one of the slowest bikes onto one of the
fastest as their next step... good way to become a stat...

  10. Bugger, misspelt her surname. Freudian slip perhaps?

Nastasia Kinski. Cast your mind back to the movie "Cat People," Theo; I'm
    sure you'd remember her body.

and he did become a stat... increment the number of people who got off a
    250, on a 1000 and didn't automatically die a horrible death.

I went from a 250 to an 800 and then to a 1000 and the 1000 is slower
    than the 800

also the 800 was safer than the 250 cos I had reach the limit of the
    250.

if you cant safely control a 1000cc bike after 12 months on a 250 then
I think you shouldnt be riding

well Biggus started with the sweeping statments

Exactly as Bob said, it was a free ride. It belongs to a mate. Also
test rode an ST1100 owned by another mate, but it was too big for my
liking, a 2006 V-Rod, and a 2007 Heritage Softail, but had nowhere near
enough money for either... (just wanted to try them).

Just got back home with the SV650 and am mighty pissed that I have to
take the cage to work tomorrow :-|

I went from a 250 to a 500 and I broke my back, put myself into a coma and
had the doctors tell my family to prepare themselves for my demise!

    I'd previously had a much nastier 500, a few 350s and an 860 but never a
    250.
I think it was the 250 that was the problem.

I've been off work Monday-Tuesday with a head cold, and I didn't feel
like riding my pushie this morning, so I rode Snotty[1] instead.

    I think it's a clear sign that one hasn't ridden one's motorcycle in a
while, when one succumbs to the urge to humiliate young lads in loud
    spoilered utes at traffic lights.

I was so ashamed. As penance, I rode the rest of the way to work at
    5km/h below the speed limit.

  16. May be showing my age here, but waaaay back in'73 my first bike was a
    CB750 K2.

Licence test consisted of Townsville plod watching a group of five of
us take off from in front of the station, ride up the street, perform
a U-turn (drop it and you fail), come back past the station, another u-
    turn and pull up safely.

Did myself no end of injuries years later when marriage/mortgage led
to getting a 250 chook chaser.

FWIW the conclusion I drew is 250 = pain.
