After a string of older used motorcycles (15 since my last new one in 1998
when I purchased a R1100S) I have finally found something that is worth
buying new. A shiny new BMW R1200GS Adventure (with ABS and on-board
computer) will be gracing the humble garage of the Boxer establishment by
    next Wednesday.

Congrats - Sounds great - don't let Clem near it though :)

I thought it was odd that you'd bought a number of non bavarian machines
lately, I guess you got that out of your system ?

I need to borrow a step ladder until I perfect the run and jump mounting
tecqunique, whilst riding one I borrowed from the dealer for the Labor Day
long weekend I could touch the ground at the lights only with the tips of my
toes. However with long tavel soft suspension it was a blast on rough windy
roads (around Woodenbong) I could lay nice black lines out of the corners, a
    real hoot.

I have had a few non-BMW's in the garage (still have the Honda 900 Hornet
and the GPz900R) but have just sold my long term tourer the K1100LT and a
recently aquired Suzuki DR650, the Ducati Monster S4R went rater quickly at
a tidy little profit as has 5 or 6 of the "Trading Stock" bikes over the
last year. I enjoy trying a bike for a few weeks before deciding if it is a
keeper or not. I still have the R100GSPD but this could go on the market if
the Adventure proves itself a capable all roads tourer going to the Border
Run this August via Innamincka and the Strzelecki Track. I found that the PD
was a great bike but find myself at full throttle far too often and the
brakes are not up to the use I put the bike.

Have been looking at the DR650 with interest. What did you think of it? I
believe you can get a low-seat for it, which is what appealed to me <grin>.
Not so sure about the uprightness of the ride position, though, and the w i
d e bars - not good for shortarses like me.... I had to have the bloody bars
on my GS500 shortened, for gawd's sake! When I'm legal to ride the V-Strom
I'd be keen to try one out.

The DR is a good low cost Dual Sport, a little underpowered for serious dirt
work and a little tall for you Betty even with a lowered seat, The Wee Strom
650 could be a good choice.

I wish you much joy of it. :)

Are you very tall,or did you get the BMW step ladder to go with it?

    regards,

I can touch the ground on both sides whilst stopped but it is a streach, I
have a lowered seat being made that will reduce the seat heght by 20mm and a
set of Ohlins being custom made that will drop the whole bike by 20mm so I
will have the same seat height as my R100GSPD and a very similar height to a
    standard R1200GS.

I thought about the standard R1200GS, but I really need the range of the 33
litre tank about 600 kilometres (standard 20 litre) and the extra 120 watts
from the alternator is handy too (720 v 600), add that to the extra
protection bars, wider footpegs (really a lot more comfortabe than standard)
larger screen etc and the extra $2,000 over the standard model is good
    value.

Derrrr, my alphabetical incompetence strikes again - I did, in fact,
mean the DL (that's the Wee Strom, isn't it???) No ambitions to be a
serious dirt-bunny, but something dual purpose might be nice, if it
    fits :)

The DL has all sorts of whiz-bang accessories that actually come
standard on the BMW F800ST (which is the other one I like, but the
    price is a bit steep...)
