There goes the false sense of security that owning a new bike gives.
Riding home from work today, I ride up to a set of lights, apply the
front brake - and the bloody right clip-on slides three or four inches
forward! Faaaaarken hell! I guess that's one of the reasons they tell
you to take it easy durng the first 1000 k's.

By the way, is it normal for a new bike to smoke on start-up during
the break-in period? It's blowing an unsual amount of smoke and I'm
not convinced its just because its warming up.

No thats modern day Pre delivery check.

Fill with oil and them off.
Hope you called the dealer to Abuse **** out of them and demand free
first service as you could have been killed...

Mate bought a GSXR1100 98 I think new, it blew smoke from day 1, he
was told it was normal, it ended up being a fucked head, some had a
pourous head on them.. 3 months to repair.

Ditto what Biggus said. My wife just got a new SV650s from Procycles
(Hornsby NSW) two months ago and has experienced none of what you've
    described.

Back to the dealer with that one, dish out a copious serve of abuse, contact
the national service manager of Suzuki here in Mel (by fax) and let them
know right away what's going on. That bike is crooked!!

What colour is the smoke? If it's black, it's only petrol and it's
running too rich during warm-up. You'll get this if you blip the
throttle. If it's white, it's water, a normal by-product of combustion
which becomes invisible (but is still always there) when your exhaust
    system warms up.

    If it's blue, it's fucked.

No smoke from my five-week-old SV650. No clip-ons, either.

Out of curiosity, Pete, when they plug in the diagnostics does that show
what revs have been used, ie if you had flogged it during run-in would that
    show?

Not as far as I know. All they can tap into is the info that the eprom is
    loaded with.
Like a firmware check on a CD-burner sorta...
They're able to extract the details of the map loaded, but I doubt that the
electronics (sensor driven) write back to the eprom.
That would be a major hassle area of possibly corruted data entering the
    system?
Not 100% sure if that applies to all manuf/ models, though..
    cheers

I don't know about bikes, but a lot of cars these days record that sort of
information and dealers are able to access it. Not sure about the legality
    of it though.
If cars are doing it, it won't be long before it happens on bikes, though
currently bikes have a lot less computing power than cars.

Do you think they actually loosen the bolts themselves before handing the
bikes over? It sounds like he's had the bike for a little while already.
Maybe the clipon was on tight when they did the pre-delivery inspection and it
    loosened itself in the meantime.

The crated-from-manufacturer bikes I've seen have the 'bars turned in
or removed, the forks pushed up, the front wheel beside, etc. in order
    to minimize shipping volume. YMMV.
