I'd recommend a VTR, preferably one that has lots and lots of extras and
look-fast stuff, and is basically show-bike quality. Also because it
wouldn't send you broke if you had to fix a panel, etc if you accidentally
    dropped it.

    (Hey Chris - how'd I do?)

You've asked for a bit of everything, and no bike will do that. When I saw
what you wrote "VFR800" was the first thing that came to mind. My girlfriend
bought one and its a fantastic all round do anything bike. Its the best
    compromise sports tourer for mine.

We need more detail of what you want. What do you mean by "long rides"?
Byron Bay? Perth? You can get tourers that carry heaps of luggage, have
heated hand grips and all that but don't have the sporty style it sounds
like you want. You don't say how much you want to spend, or how experienced
    a rider you are.

Nearly anything will keep up with your mates around Glorious. If you can't
keep up with them on say an old FZR600, either they're going to fast or
you're a shit rider. The latter in my case!

Take a heap of bikes for a ride would be the best advice people will give
you. Try several Japanese bikes, particularly something like a GSXR, CBR or
a ZZR. Probably steer clear of Ducatis etc because it sounds like you want
to keep it simple. Look for a good seating position and the right
combination of features you're looking for.

Ride it first, ride it last, but I don't think you'll go wrong with a
    VFR800.

You need a ZX6R you do. I don't really think too many people have been able
to convincingly pull away from me in leaps and bounds unless it was boky
when we were two up (VFR800 torque will do that to you). Oh yeah, and those
blokes on worked R1's and MV Augusts F4s etc when I was on a stock '96
ZX6R. Kept a few of em behind me though. Must have been a funny ride for
em! Something like Mt Glorious it great for a 600, I had a ball ... a
little bit too much of one really, almost came off a few times, and went on
the wrong side of the road once with one of those turns where the centre
isle blocks all the good corner room!

  13. Nah, its easy, he clearly wants a Goldwing, and an R1100GS, and
    an RS250, and a CT110...

big (hmmm bikes, bet you can't stop at one...)

Just go and ride everything. Then discard the ones you can't afford anyway,
and buy the one you liked the most. The more bikes you ride, the easier it
will be to determine what your needs and preferences really are. It'll be a
lot easier for people to offer useful advice when you can present them with
a list of specific bikes on a shortlist - how can anyone else start to help
when you don't know where to start? Good luck with the search! :)

Why hasn't anyone stated the obvious.

    1300cc
    Panniers
    heated grips
    tank bag and tank cover
    Black
    Performance Tourer
Comfortable 2 up on long runs
Handles like a sports bike in the twisties

Sounds like my FJR 1300 :)
