Not wanting to call you a prize turnip (lord knows enough other people have)
but I think you may wish to research your figures in slightly more detail
    As with this assertion.

Wrong way round, old son. I'd cheerfully buy a Smart (or something smaller
still) to use in town, but I need a vehicle that will (a) tow a 2 tonne
    trailer & (b) drive down a 1:3 track, so I have a Discovery. Having
bought a Discovery, it being too expensive to buy another car more suitable
for city use, I use the Disco for everything.

I assume nothing of the sort. You've completely lost me here.
I imagine it would be far more unpopular than rationing by cost. It
might also encourage more people to live apart, and more homes to be
    required as a result.
It's A problem, granted. However, the problem I thought you were
addressing was the opposite one - that is, what happens when those
cars are not parked outside houses but in use on the roads.

Either you've changed the subject, or you need lessons in logic rather
more than I. I suspect both.

    eh?

Item b) assumes that the Government draws up annual budgets based on
estimates of incoming revenues. If the petrol tax revenue reduces then
there is a shortfall which can only be balanced in one of three ways:
i - Tax something else more
    ii - Spend less
    iii- Borrow

Of the three options I think i is most likely in the world I inhabit.

It's his normal mode of engagement- when he comes up against an argument
he can't counter he ignores it and shifts the subject.

In about three days time he'll be tied up in knots in several threads
and will disappear for a few weeks.

The reasoning wasn't for the state's budget to rise but for it to remain
    constant.

In an ideal world I'd like more control over where money was spent, but
in this world I don't have that and realise that if there was a cut on
petrol tax that a cut in services wouldn't follow; there'd be a rise
    somewhere else.

Of course you're not. Like you when I want a reasoned debate I always
find being insulting is a good start.

For what it's worth I only snap at your ankles because you're a
committed spinner of tall stories and have an *utter* inability to
accept when you've been caught out lying or are beaten.

Which points nicely back to you stripping a Honda 750 four down in
around 1973 in the presence of TT racing luminaries when by my reckoning
    you were around 13-15.
    There are renewable alternatives readily available for power generation;
wind and water power if and when we have the will to use them.
That's not a parallel, the health impact of poor diet is on those who eat
the diet not the general population.

Apart from flatulance I don't think poor diet contributes to global
warming (if one excludes the packaging).

And your Rover was any better?

If you could point out *where* I disassociated myself from the above I'd
    be grateful.

And if you could explain wtf this had to do with the point of this
thread - fuel taxation I'd be most grateful.
Bollocks, revenue is a big part. Pricing people out of private and into
    public transport is another.
It's the closest people can get to a cartel without actually forming
    one.

But again, what's this got to do with fuel taxation?
Again, bollocks. Based on discussion with colleagues in other European
companies my conclusion is that there isn't a massive difference.

I think we get a pretty raw deal since we seem to pay taxes in the same
ball park without getting services in the same ball park.
Not being insulting? Maths (note, not 'math') is one of my
strongpoints. It's why I went into Engineering and it's the cornerstone
    of a successful career.
Where does high BHP result in inefficiency?
Engine size is surely not the parameter though, isn't it fuel
    consumption / emissions?
You know ****-all about what I do. Last time around I was a 'priority'
user if push came to shove.

You also know **** all about the rationing, you're only a couple of
    years older than me.
I disagree- money is admittedly a large part and the move of tax from
direct to indirect taxation is nicely supported by fuel which has the
benefit of copping for both duty and VAT.

Well, in my rural area we've got a community 'taxi' type service which
runs one or two days a week- about a quid for an 8 mile round trip.
No, I chose a profession rather than being a driver.
    *yawn*

Railways and smaller lorries in an ideal world.

Whilst finite, it will be available for at least the next 50 years.
No. What we should be doing is developing biofuel. That way people can
continue to run existing vehicles on alcohol and veg diesel.

To expect people to use public transport shows an understanding of the
problems we face and the inadequacy of our bus/rail networks.

Build more/bigger roads. It's a far lower cost than upgrading public
    transport.
Or use those taxes more efficiently, ie cut red tape etc.
So you think by cutting taxes on fuel people will suddenly jump in
their cars and go on daft driving sprees? Are people going to take
longer routes to get to work or the shops? Don't be silly.

Lower the fuel duty, the cost of goods will shrink, wage demands will
be lower and inflation will fall as a result. Interest rates will come
down and people will spend more money, thus boosting the UK economy.
