Not an option IMHO. All road-building should stop now.
Let's stop wars while we're at it. I'm taking my ball home if you're
    off to fairy land.
You're the only one saying that.
That's too much bollocks [1] to even begin to tackle.

[1] Should that be too many?

Cut red tape, reduce public sector employment, increase number of dole monkeys.

A bloated civil service is a good thing. Discuss.

Having someone on the dole is a lot cheaper than having them employed.

No pension for the dole mole for one thing.

I was thinking along rather more holistic lines than just money.

Define red tape. My employment protection is their red tape.

Convert your car to LPG or use a powered two wheeler and you don't have
to pay CC and a reduced fuel bill.

Far from a stupid argument it seems to me to be a pretty sensible
application of carrot and stick legislation.

Whilst true, the number of years of oil we have 'left' has been
increasing for the last 40 years odd as a result of improvments in our
ability to get at it. In the early 70's we were predicting it would
all run out in 30 years....

  11. Plus there are the huge new finds like those in Kazakhstan in 1979 and 2000.
Sure, it will all end, but not for a long time.

    not true.

1/ the saudis have traditionally guessed at their reserves, the only
hard data their is suggests their reserves are vastly over inflated,
the saudis did this because the more oil they claimed to have in
reserve tomorrow the more cash they got today.

2/ extraction and production are at an all time high, there are other
fields out there but not light seeet crude and not nearly as easy to
extract, so production is unlikely to decrease, on the contrary,
production is likely to slowly decline, never actually reaching zero
mind you, but we have maybe, and I mean maybe, ten more years at todays
    volumes and todays costs.

3/ demand is rocketing, demand is likely to increase by 50% over the
next ten years, china alone could increase world demand by 25%, and
there is no way you're going to convince them to stay on pushbikes just
so you can run your motor a few extra years.

4/ from the above, a 10% reduction in output or a 10% increase in
demand or even 5% of each is enough to **** things up ___totally___
if you think all it takes is everyone gets 90% of what they have now
and price per gallon goes up 10% then you do NOT understand supply and
demand vs a finite resource, fuel will go up 100% then 1000% and at
that point it is worth the while of every country with a standing army
to rise up and sieze it, usually from the foreign companies in their
    country extracting their oil....

it's not just oil, I bought some steel from our local steel stockist
earlier this year to finish up a trailer and some other jobs, the price
has tripled in recent times, when I asked what the **** is up with the
price of this they shrugged and said "demand from china".. same thing
    with coal for power stations...

anyone who thinks we have 50 years of oil left where you just ride into
a petrol station and fill the tank and then bitch to the lads down the
pub over a beer is blind, anyone filling a tank in those times is in
the same league as those with large twin screw diesel powerboats
running twin 45 gallon per hour detroid diesels in return for 25 mph as
they cross the channel is today... don't give a **** because it's chump
    change

when petrol gets nearer inkjet ink in prices your gixxers will be worth
more as scrap metal even with 0 miles on the clock than they are as
    vehicles

Well I can afford private transport so if the Government could tax a few
cars, bikes, lorries off the road I'd be most grateful to them.

And FWIW I live in a rural area with next to no usable public transport.

Actually I think they probably did. Of course it was in schools,
hospitals, dentists, local government DLO organisations etc. etc. etc.

Since Labour have come to power the cost of the public services has gone
up and (IMO) rightly so. Just wish they'd not taxed the pension fund
dividends and had the balls to put this on VAT or income tax / national
    insurance.
