Is it right that they will still be retiring at 60 when the rest of us can't
    until 67?

Bit of a thread drift but ......

The Civil service has been made an example of in terms of low pay
awards compared to private sector employers (e.g. large insurance
firms) by successive governments for over a decade. It has always
been understood by emplyees that whilst the pay is relatively
poor the pension was good. Remove the favourable pension
provision and you remove the only real incentive left for
attracting quality staff. My own employer is not civil service as
such but a public funded organisation with "by analogy" terms and
conditions of employment. We have considerable difficulty in
attracting staff at all lower grades due to the poor salaries we
are able to offer compared to private sector emplyers in the
region. Even if we do manage to employ reasonable good staff they
freaquently leave within 3-years to obtain better paid posts in
the private sector. Our turnover of new graduate staff is is
    almost 50% within 3 years.

As regards the "underworked" comment that really does display an
ingnorance (or at best very limitted knowledge) of modern civil
    service working culture.

That's actually not *quite* true - only certain LPG-powered cars do
qualify for the exemption. My converted Range Rover, for example,
doesn't. Not quite sure what the requirements are though...
Indeed. But then again I'm probably one of those "rich people" that
    numbnuts refers to above.

  6. No one said life was fair or equal or anything else. You live and then you
die. Those are the only guarantees.

I didn't realise they were bringing a law out preventing people taking
out a private pension which pays out aged 60. Nor did I realise that
civil servants would get a state pension aged 60. You live and learn,
    eh?

I work for a local council (Reading) and the retirement age for us is
65, so it's nt all local councils.

It does? That's not what they said when I joined them. Has it changed?
