New discs - new pads?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Wicked Uncle Nigel, Sep 27, 2009.

  1. Well, it seems the GTR has the dreaded hard spots on the front disks.
Apparently, the holes were a little too closely spaced on them, and you
get a heat-affected zone building up between the holes. The result is a
    pulsing under braking.

Fortunately, Kawasaki-san has decided that - despite the bike being
*just* out of warranty - he will foot the bill. Thank you
    Kawasaki-san[1].

So, sometime in the next few days I shall have two new disks.

Question. Should I get new pads fitted at the same time[2]? If so,
should I pay for them, or expect Kawasaki-san to grease up a little
    more?

I haven't discussed this with the dealer yet, I'm just interested in
    opinions.

[1] Everyone! But a Kawasaki! They build fucking brilliant bikes, and
    back them up. YKIMS.
[2] I have *no* idea how much wear there is on the existing pads. The
bike was dealer-serviced 2,000 miles ago.

    No, yes.

I'll bet their recommendation is new pads with new discs.

In the professional world you never fit new disks without new pads. Bikes
and cars. So you would not expect a dealer to do so.

In pikey world cut the pads back on a pane of glass using fine emery paper
if they have lots of life.

Dunno about payment but when I fitted new discs to my R1, I asked ABE
(the manufacturers) and they reckoned that as long as the original
discs were flat (as in not ridged) and the pads fairly new then there
    wouldn't be a problem.

The pads were, in fact, virtually brand new, so I just gave them a
light rub on a piece of fine-ish wet 'n' dry to take off any fine
surface detail. They did take quite a while to bed-in though.

Actually, what do racers do? Do they swap wheel/discs and keep the old
pads? I didn't change pads/discs on my race LC but I was lucky never
to have to race in the rain; I wouldn't have had to brake as hard with
the wet wheels anyway. Actually, I can only ever recall using the wets
    once on track in practice.
