I hadn't seen it before... the yellow bike looks terrible (but then
you'd expect that of a yellow bike!).

The silver isn't bad, and the black is nice :) [1]

[1] Is is just my imagination or is naked bike styling more inovative
than sports bike styling at the moment?

Looking at that headlight/instrument panel I think you misspelt fugly.

That stacked headlight with the instrument panel perched on top just looks
wrong to me. But then, I'm an old fart who never figured out why someone
would make a headlight that was not round.
Remember back when if you busted a headlight you could walk into Big-W and
buy a replacement for $4. Came in two sizes, 5 and 7 inch, fitted all cars
and bikes. Now you need to first make an appointment with your bank manager.
    Then order it ex-factory.

    Because it looks pretty !
That's the price you pay to make things look good.

A principle I frequently expound to my IS students with regard to
software design, but I believe it has wider application:

"If you try to design something so that it looks good, it probably won't
work very well, but if you design something so that it works well, it
    will almost certainly look good."

The vast majority of flashturbation sites, and quite a few motorcycles
    serve as exemplars.

I think Zebee still does that - the beauty of a Guzzi.

Is that a picture or an artist's impression?

If it's an artists impression then it's a damn good job!

    I think they're actual photos.

I'd agree with your first premise but believe that your second premise
is wrong... most things designed to work well simply look 'functional'
not 'good'. Of course being a BMW rider you are demonstrating this...

But then you are in denial and think BMW's look good too aren't you *grins*

Oi! Almost 30 years on, *our* BMWs look sexier (and work better) than any
faired bike since. The RS fairing was a quantum leap in design that is often
    challenged but never bettered.

    Gary (IMHO of course :)

Very true , the K100rs is a quieter ride less buffeted than R1.

Errrm that'd be because it's the size of a barn door and hence reduces
top speed to provide that nice quiet ride while sitting upright like a
dog begging. The R1 has slightly different design criteria.

If you manage to tuck in under the R1 fairing you'll find it much
    quieter than sitting bolt upright...
