    includes

Driver to have proper control of a vehicle
A driver must not drive with a person or animal in the driver’s lap.
The rider of a motorbike must not ride with an animal on the fuel
tank. This does not apply to a person who travels less than 500 metres
    for the purposes of farming.

PENALTY: Three demerit points (four in a school zone) and a $324 fine
    ($405 in a school zone).

time for a suzuki across or a buell ;)

I wonder how the law would apply to carrying an animal home from the
    taxidermist, okkystrapped to the tank..

Interesting that in NSW they hand out extra demerit points for certain
offences in a school zone, regardless of whether or not committing that
offence actually increases the danger to any other person (i.e. child)
or not (which is the whole point of having "school zones", duh). So
riding a motorcycle through a school zone on the Friday afternoon of a
double points weekend with no helmet will cost you 8 points... and
another 8 points for the dog in the tank bag.

  3. F800 would be more likely ;)

Thanks Johnny5 for letting me know. Need to get an old Krauser topbox
for Maries R1150 now, so we can cut it to suit a Fox Terrier. The
bike already has a Krauser topbox and mounting plate but we don't want
to sacrifice that one. Not sure what I'll do with the TDM/dog
situation, though I've got a topbox I don't like them and the mounting
plate isn't fitted at all, I use a rack and bag cause I find that
system suits my needs better. Don't want to have to take the sidecar
    everywhere.

Given that their wording explicitly states "petrol tank/lap", there are
numerous possibilities... pillion seat, handlebars, backpack, panniers,
tank panniers.. 1 each side for balance!

  5. And another 8 points for the dog not wearing a helmet?

    Bloody small farm.
Or A Gold Wing or ST1100 and others are also OK because that metal
tank-looking thing is not a fuel container?

It is so that they can use a public road for a short distance to change
    paddocks etc

That is the intention of the rule, however as published, it does not say
that, it says specifically states that the farmer may travel for 500
metres and not a single millimetre further, and if the next gate is 501
metres down the road they will be breaking the law and liable to pay a
fines and accumulate points on their licence. Quite obvious from that,
and the assumption that all motorcycles have a tank in front of the
rider, that little or no consultation with affected parties has taken
    place.

  9. So if you place your gates 450m apart for several km, you could dive
in and out of your gates and travel quite distance huh?

We had a situation at South Arm (at the mouth of the Derwent) a few
years back where we had access to a lot of land to ride quad bikes on.
It is a semi-rural area and there was some great riding to be had. But
there was one area where we had to nick up the footpath (I use the
term loosely, more like a rough grass verge with some gravel) for 100m
to get from one property to another. We took it easy there and then
fanged it back into the bush. Unfortunately there happened to a prick
of an ex-cop living directly over the road from our diversion who
    complained.

Easy, we went and got RV rego for the quads (you have to define the
area you are going to use them and put plates on the back) but the
cost was worth it as we then pulled out onto the bitumen and fanged it
past his house and back into the next gate and there wasn't a damn
thing he could do about it. How dare we have fun! And no, the bikes
were Polaris 600 4 strokers and not particularly noisy or anything. He
    was just an old arsehole.

That's probably true, and no doubt the exemption for farmers
demonstrates that it was the intention of the authors to allow farmers
to ride on the road with a dog on the tank within the proximity of their
farm, but the fact that they specified an exact and draconian limit of
500M shows that whoever did the drafting probably had little knowledge
of what they were actually writing.
