My television has gone bang [1]. I'm not at home at the moment but I'm
told it was "quite frightening" when smoke came out the back.

    I've got about £350 what's recommended?

[1] It lasted reasonably well and was secondhand when I got it - thanks
    darsy.

That money should get you a nice, big 100Hz CRT telly, if they still do
them anywhere. It's a bit pikey for a decent LCD/Plasma.

www.dixons.co.uk, they're only online but you can exchange any duff stuff at
    currys on the high street.

depends on what you want. You'll get a 1/2 decent never-heard-of-it-on-
the-high-street branded HD 32" from the likes of ebuyer.com. We've
    bought a Hannspree 32" (£320) and a 37" (£400) HD flatscreens from
them in the last 8 months, and are very pleased with both of them. I
see ebuyer aren't listing these any more, but they're still doing
    Vistron's which are similarly rated.
np. It must be 8 years or so since I bought it, so not had a ban
    innings.

At that price you won't get a good flat panel , so I'd go for another second
hand CRT - you'll get a good quality widescreen with freeview for not much
    at all

500 would get one of these

    http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=HITA-L37V01U

Which is 1080P, not some "HD-Ready" bollix.

I've got a 28" ws crt sitting in the garage under a blanket
having swapped it out for a 40" 1080p lcd the other week.

You're welcome to it foc as a stop gap.

Yeah, I let my 32" 100Hz WS Panasonic go for 150 quid last year, as
the market for them has fallen flat on its arse and won't ever
    recover.

Is that the Wharfedale one that's exactly the same as the one that I
gave him that's just gone bang?

My Mum's old TV is available - cost £400 a year ago. Sony CRT,
freeview included, big (dunno size - will measure if interested) on
legs, weighs a ton. In Reading. Cost - dunno, erm, £200?

not strictly true, though I'll admit you won't get a good /well known
brand/ flat panel at that price.

In any case, Sweller only watches the news and '80s footage of the
miner's strike so he's hardly going to need high quality.

No, it's a <thinks> Matsui. Cheap brand shunted out by DSG
but we've had it for 9 years and it has a Phillips tube,
so the picture is pretty good.

Seems a shame to skip it when it still works.

were going cheap in Tesco back in 2000.

that's a reasonable price, but the Hannspree 32" I bought at the end
of last year for £310 delivered was 1080i.
