Do you have a surround sound system plugged in, too?

Some players won't do multiple outputs, so if they're set to HDMI then
they won't output to the SS and vice versa.

Nope: upscaling DVD player -> HDMI cable -> HDTV.

The DVD player should just need HDMI Audio turning on then. You may have
to also turn on Digital Audio, too. If so, select all audio types.

Yes, yes... the TV's getting the audio through the HDMI connection just
fine. Until it doesn't, usually part-way through a film, which is really
    annoying.

I have a cheap Sumvision DVD player that does that. Never really got
    to the bottom of why.

    Ah, sorry.

The chances are you have either an HDMI cable with a break in it. Dirty
HDMI ports. Damaged HDMI ports. A DVD player with a fault such as a dry
    solder.

Do you have someone local who has an upscaling DVD player? The easiest
test is to borrow their fully functioning set-up and see if it's the TV.
If it's not then slowly replace their kit with yours.

But first, compressed air and contact cleaner on the HDMI ports.

Oh, there is also the slight possibility the DVD player is dirty, too.

No; as I've said before, around here they still get scared when the
train comes towards them on the screen.
Well, I think a new HDMI cable was something to try next, if I can be
bothered. Using an analogue audio connection should sort it out anyway.
Could be. I'll take the cover off and blow it all out.
