Any recommendations for a free one I can use with Thunderbird, since
Freeserve have pulled the proverbial plug?
    Cheers,

No but I am sure plenty of folks will suggest something reliable, like a
    bought and paid for one.

Freeserve/wanadoo have pulled the plug on their news server? When did
they announce that (teach me to just junk the annoying emails they send
me)? I wondered why I hadn't been able to connect since Friday.
Bollocks. Oh well I suppose you get used to google grouping.

I'm sure its not a solution for people who post a lot, but I don't any
more and don't read a lot either. I used to use the german server but
when they went chargeable I wasn't happy with the payment methods -
    don't know if they've changed.
I'm irked that my ISP have yanked their news server and I would like a
free one to replace it but I realise I won't get that sort of help
here! So for now I'll stick to google, unless I change ISPs.

I'm now with Nildram, which is a reasonably competent ISP. The German
server still knocks spots off Nildram's.

Nildram's news server is rubbish though. Utterly rubbish.

For some reason I think that Nildram's serviced/owned by Pipex these
    days.

IIRC Nildram is owned by Pipex, but (thankfully) operated
    independently.

The news server certainly got worse about 6 or so months ago. I blamed
    it on Pipex.
