Nice MOT result

I took the ST3 for an MOT today at my nearest testing station. I was a bit
worried that the tester might take exception to the noise of the Termis as I
haven't been there before with a loud bike. I sat in the office whilst it
was tested. I flinched when I heard someone start it up and the sound
reverberated around the building. The receptionist commented that it was
louder than anything she had heard for a while, increasing my paranoia.
However, I needn't have worried. The tester came in to the office a few
minutes later, saying "That's all right, that is!". He then proceeded to
show me photos of his much-worked-upon and improved R1 and told me about
this travels abroad on it whilst the receptionist filled out the details on
my nice, new MOT certificate . We then went on to discuss the benefits of
wheelie schools, track days and suchlike for a pleasant 10 minutes or so and
he recommended a place with a dyno and reputable tuner for getting my Power
    Commander fine tuned.

Top bloke - he gets all my custom from now on

For those in or near the Wrexham area, I can highly recommend

    http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en...1&gl=uk&view=text&latlng=14957995679556352328

as they're "liberal" with exhaust sounds :) I'd worried my Remus pipes on
the boxercup were a tad fruity but they just commented that it sounded nice

Is it a requirement of the MOT that the vehicle is road tested as my local
one (above) always whizzes the bike up the road. :)

Nope he's a young guy who just moans that twin cylinder bikes (except
Aprilia Mille's apparently) are all a bit crap :) ... .and as he passes mine
every time I'll not argue, when the K eventually needs an MOT he may get a
shock as I don't think he knows BMW do 4 cylinder bikes :)

Likewise, although the people that know the identity of my friendly
local mechanic are probably already aware of the identity of my friendly
local slightly-deaf and partially-sighted MOT tester. (Not the same
    person, BTW.)

    How will that work then?
Will it be illegal to have a vehicle off the road awaiting repair?

Sadly, I think you're right. It's only a matter of time before some
joker says: "Well, they have to notify us if the vehicle is untaxed,
so why shouldn't they notify us if it's not MoT'd?"

Anyway, booked in for 10am tomorrow.

Don't forget insurance is going that way soon...
Gotta admit, I don't have a huge problem with that, as long as it's not
    zero-tolerance.

By "zero-tolerance", I mean hitting people if the MOT/insurance/tax is
renewed a few days or even a week or so late. It doesn't happen with tax
at the mo, so I see no great reason for it to with the others.

A fine example... We bought a car for SWMBO the other week, on the
Wednesday evening. On the Thursday morning, I started ringing around to
get insurance sorted, and 'erself chucked it on her plastic in the
evening, effective Friday morning. I presume the previous owner cancelled
their insurance pretty damn sharpish, because it showed on askmid as
being uninsured on the Thursday. It was covered for Friday, but didn't
show up as insured on askmid until Saturday morning. It was, of course,
sat in the drive Thu & Fri.
No, it's not. Not with emailed, printable certificates.
I have no great problem with that, as a concept...
    What "problem"?
    I'm an amateur mechanic.
    I don't drive stuff that's not MOTd.
I've got stuff that's not MOTd, sure - but it's SORNed and not on the
road. As long as they don't get shot of the "It's OK to drive it to the
test centre whilst untaxed/tested" clause, there's really no inherent
    problem that I can see.
    Completely separate issue, but...
    <laughs>, <points at Krap-****>

So pick the flamin' thing up the next day...
I think you'll find that there's NEVER been a "liberty" to drive a car
without an MOT just because it's too inconvenient not to.
    <considers current fleet>
Six V5Cs, three MOTs, two tax discs.

    Your point was...?

I do. It throws the entire burden of guilt upon the vehicle owner.
SORN is bad enough, and remember they had to change that from the
original proposition which was that *all* vehicles would have to be
taxed, irrespective of age, location and degree of decrepitude.

And, let's face it, the main point of SORNing is revenue raising,
either by ensuring all vehicles on the road are taxed (and I don't
have a problem with that) or by fining someone who has inadvertently
not taxed their car/bike/van/whatever and *has not used it on the road
at all*. And I definitely have a problem with that.

With a stable of vehicles like mine It's getting to be a headache
remembering all the MoTs. In fact, I'm going to set up a reminded on
the Mac's calendar function for every MoT now.

Yes, it is. You can tax online, insure online, or insure by phone.
    I've done it.
Bwaaahahahahaha! The list of dealers this group could produce who fall
into the "don't let them touch your bike with a fucking ten-foot pole"
    is immense.

And then there's classics: a surprising number of MoT people (and
coppers) are completely ignorant of the laws governing road legality
    of ShiteOldBikes (and cars).

    "Your brake light isn't working."

"Yes it is: it just doesn't work off the front brake, and I was using
    that."

    "That's an offence."

    "Not on a 1975 Suzuki GT250 it isn't."

    "Why not"

    "Because they never fitted one."

    "Right, you're nicked."

And as for spannering: I wouldn't trust many spanner monkeys on my 400
Four simply because they don't know how to fettle something that
    antique.
