  4. Yeah yeah yeah,... and we can trace our family tree all the way back to Sir
Simon de Wegwode 1215AD, via Josiah of the pottery fame.

Unfortunately, our side of the family (Wedgwood Robinsons of Maryport and
Silloth) didn't get the money due to a missing page in a parish register
    circa 1870ish.

Most of the family split after this and dispersed to the US, these were the
Dodges who formed a little car company and bought a little island, & the
Robinsons moved to Calgary in CA, and our lot (Wedgwood Browns) stayed
behind to become Master Mariners and sail the clippers.

My grandads father was born on the John Gambles just off the Cape of Good
hope, the John Gambles was the sister ship to the Cutty Sark. (As mentioned
    in this article.... http://www.rnsubmus.co.uk/nasmith/nasmith.htm)

A potted history.... you didn't ask, but hey ho, I'm proud - shame I'm just
not hewn from the same mold really.

  9. That site doesn't mention d'Oyly-Hughes's later career, like it does
Nasmith's. He pops up again at the beginning of WWII, in command of a
flat-top, HMS Glorious, off Norway, during the evacuation of a British
expeditionary force. He allowed the RAF to try to land Hurricanes on his
deck, a task only possible if the planes were heavily weighted at the
tail, so much they could barely fly. A dozen Hurricanes were saved from
    German destruction by this.
Pity then, the Glorious was sunk by the Scharnhorst shortly after,
    leaving only five survivors.
    Heroic failure, indeed.

Two places I know quite well. Don't admit connections there if you
    know what's good for you.

  11. Ah, don't be to harsh.
Silloth was always nice, if a little similar to Eastbourne in that it seemed
to be inhabited mainly by old people.
Maryports ongoing transformation from dreary old harbour and town full of
aging victorian buildings, into a viable tourist attraction still amazes me.
We go back to visit my aunt a couple of times a year who has a farm house
outside Raughton Head in the middle of nowhere.

Next time you're in the area, give me a shout - I'm in Carlisle.
Silloth and Maryport are both gaining names for their beer and music
festivals, the Maryport Blues festival in particular.

  15. Ahh.... not me..... I was going the other way out of Oxford on Saturday to
    meet TOG at Oxford Services.

On a bit of de-restricted Autobahn last year somewhere between the
Nurburgring and Basel I got involved in a fast convoy inc an RS4, a couple
of porkers, and a 535d, we were taking it in turns to lead for about 50k.

We were averaging over 140mph [indicated] for most of the time.

As cages go I class it in the "competent and effective cross county weapon".
