Most probably a injection injury caused by a jet of pressurized oil.

Treatment must be done immediately to avoid tissue damage and nechrosis but most
ER staff is completely clueless about this kind of injuries.
As expected due to the lack of proper treatment.

He can be happy having lost only a fingertip, injected oil can migrate and cause
big damage far from the injection point.
This kind of injury can be produced by diesel injectors, grease guns, paint
guns, etc. Solvent/paint ones are particularly nasty.

There's an aspect I hadn't considered, but not having seen the injury,
the bike or the victim I was guessing (hey, this is usenet, after all)
    wildly.
I'll bear that in mind, should I ever have to seek assistance for such
    an injury.
Now that does ring a bell - the migration possibilities. Nasty.
"Never fool around with compressed air". And where's the fun in that,
    eh?

Maybe he was thinking of bromine. That's a ginger gas.

I had one go bang while I was re-fitting it, with my hands mostly
between it and the car, and my arms through the belt.....

Why would he (or we) want to stop?

I rewatched the Jackass / 2001 Gumball 3000 video last night. It
reminded me of a recent holiday.

How? I thought they were fired electrically? Did you have the battery
    disconnected?

I've had to put seats with airbags in/out, scare the bejeezus out of me
they do. I don't even like being around balloons popping.

Heh. I have a huge chunk blown out of the end of my favourite
insulated screwdriver, which is all the reminder I need when I pick it
    up ;)

That's a very interesting question. I didn't have the batter
disconnected, but there weren't any connections to it either. It was on
the cock so I hit it to get it straight.
    Bang

    Alfa 145 S reg FWIW.
Yeah. I don't Did the interior in my first 156 (swapped for a leather
one) but wouldn't (probably) mess with the new one. Airbags all over.

When I did the diesel injection specialisation course, we had many
cautionary tales about getting hands/fingers near diesel injectors
under pressure when observing spray patterns. [1]

It's very nasty if it gets in to your bloodstream, which is easy when
    it's squirting out at 2000 -> 4000 PSI ... [2]

    Paul.

[1] So much so, we weren't even allowed to use diesel in the test
    machine.
[2] These were 'old' injectors, common rail are running far higher
    than this.

This was the point of the OP - and at least a couple of us have learned
    something from it.
