It's all about the suspense, just like the best horror films.

I've got a big spanner with what looks like weld spark scars, from
    battery terminal contacting.

I habitually wear a face shield these days, as my abhorrence for shite
in the eyes worsens with age and wearing specs. And I've got into
latex/nitrile whatever gloves, too - coo, they make cleaning up easier
providing one remembers they aren't resistant to brake fluid. They've
saved me a few knuckles, so are well worth it.

I've got an empty screwdriver handle for the same reason - the blade
completely vanished in a puff of smoke.

FFS what sort of current were you fucking with!

Just a car battery. A very big one admittedly as it was my old 5.9L V8
Cherokee's. The screwdriver was one of those very long thin ones that
are great for getting to things like carb drain screws.

Triumph Dolomite 1850HL: the starter solenoid took to taking on water
given the chance, then either drained the battery double quick, or just
refused to pull in. As the block leans over at about 30 degrees with
the starter on the low side - and hidden by the exhaust, with the
suspension turret and chassis rail in the way as well, SOP was to slide
a spanner 'on the flat' between exhaust and chassis rail, then turn it
through 90 degrees to short across the solenoid terminals.

It usually worked, but sometimes the engine would rock a bit
enthusiastically and trap the effing spanner, leading to arcs and
sparks. I tried it from beneath, but Amorous Amy, the Naughty Night
Nurse and g/f of the time tried to run me over with my own fucking car,
the dim tart, so I gave up doing that and went back to welding spanners.
Yeah, I get there too - but then, while the gloves are off, so to
speak, I roll a fag and it all calms down.

pfftt probably only about 600 amps then. That's not even the size of Wales.

A friend was helping me repair the head gasket on a Renault 12.
Somehow he managed to use his watchstrap to short out between the live
contact on the starter motor or the alternator and ground. He didn't
notice for a few seconds until his strap got hot. Then he found that
it had welded a few of the links together.

I like to think I have.

I'm probably wrong but that's better than worrying about what I might
    break next.

Commonly known as stored energy when you're doing risk assessments
every day of the week. I've just started doing a load ready for the
power station outages this year and stored energy is one that'll get
your assessment rejected if you don't mention it and have control
measures in place to reduce the risks.

I've gone past my head office tolerance level and actually volunteered
to go to Aberdeen next week and to do that I've got to be *very*
bored. At least I'm going by train rather than driving so I'll be
sitting drinking beer all the way there.

You know as well as I do that I've got 2 weeks away touring
Scandinavia on the bike soon. What's your point?

  16. Classic one.
It's a never-ending source of amusement how many feckers don't perform
the basic first step of disconnecting the battery before doing anything
    major under the bonnet.

  17. It is a never ending source of amusment[1] that idiots covered in scars
haven't learnt not to wear jewellery when doing manual labour.

The expansion is tiny and the turbulence produced would itself cause
some heating. Also, to blow through a small aperture would require
compression first, though to be fair it would be nowhere near
adiabatic inside a moist human body.
Air entrainment & windchill. The wide mouth, slow breath has a
relatively large flow area and low gas velocity so the amount of
cooler air entrained will be a smaller proportion of the total flow.
