Art doesn't require skill unless a particular style necessitates it.
It's not a display of prowess or a recognition of brush ability. It's a
product of creativity that may or may not be renderered with a degree
    of skill.

A carpenter might put up an outstanding integrated bookcase cunningly
using space optimally. He might have had a grand vision to inspire him
but you don't need to know about that, you can look at it and say "Nice
work pal, well skilly, I can see where all that training and dedication
    went"

An artist might show you a painting/stack of bricks/stuffed kitten. She
might have learned taxidermy, mixing mortar or refined an exquisite
brush technique to produce it. But really you don't need to know about
that. You can look at it and say "Hmm, that speaks to me, and helps me
see things with a different perspective"

....or the bookcase might fall down and the painting be shite. But you
see where I'm coming from? If you stop thinking of art with a capital A
it's much easier to get your head round. It doesn't have to be GOOD. It
just IS. Therefore any subjective opinion is irrelevant as regards its
    definition.
As for Is it Even art or not? You might as well say Is it a bookcase or
is it furniture? There are always blurred distinctions at the border of
ideas (See Plato). For my money isfthe intention is that it is to be
art then it is. Whether I like it or not doesn't change its origin.

I'm with Krusty & Ace on this. I'm reminded of this story

  5. Indeed. In the same way that watching caged monkeys going out of their
minds (AKA Big Brother) is actually really really boring.
At least you get to go out in a blaze..

I'm sure you're right, but a short-term scam would be plenty good
enough to prove my point. I'm not arguing that any old shite would
sell, just that any old shite could be deemed 'art' by the so-called
    experts.

But surely the creativity itself should show a degree of skill?
That, I suspect, is the reason why we'll never agree.

Ah, so anything created by the likes of Damien Hirst & Tracy Emin could
yet turn out to be officially crap? Much as I'd like to think that's
true, it seems unlikely given the fact it's sanctioned by people like
Charles Saatchi. At least he did the decent thing & torched some of it.

Why? Using Champ's music analogy early punk was almost devoid of any
music ability and yet it completely changed the evolution of pop music.
And if challenging the status quo isn't a fundamental requirement of a
piece or school of art then what is? For it to "look nice" as per Ace's
definition? One of the punk parallels in art might be the Fauves.
Didn't look pretty and could arguably have been faked by a mental
    patient.

All these "problems" disappear if you cease to demand that the noun has
an inbuilt set of standards that suit you personally or could ever be
    regulated.
It's the only definition that makes any sense. If it has to be judged
to be "Art" by committee then it will never happen and the word and
concept is useless. First it would be a pile of bricks that doesn't
qualify, then cubism, then something else, etc.

You're just making things diffocult for yourself. And at the same time
perpetuating a needless and silly argument that is self-defeating.

  13. That makes two odd people on UKRM then. Which I guess doesn't really
qualify as news given that oddity (and not the space sort) is a
    requirement for long-term inhabitants.

  14. I used to write songs (for a semi-prog version of 'songs' anyway).

I suspect that they would be of absolutely no interest to anyone other

Makes sense - most punk was just talentless twats jumping on a
bandwagon & doing stuff purely for shock factor too.
OK I hereby decree that all my usenet posts are intended as art. So by
your definition, art is what they are. If Charles Saatchi's reading -
you can have printed copies for £300 each.

That's pretty much what they said about the Fauves as well, I believe.
But then when you look at what came out of it (even if you didn't
appreciate the music itself) you had bands such as Magazine, The
Pretenders, Buzzocks, and Joy Division who have produced some very
memorable- in some cases classic- pop music. But then if you want
non-talentless twats you might as wel go for pure musicianship and only
listen to modern jazz or classical composers and stay away from the
simplistic genre of pop music altogether, while you're perusing the
    classical art catalogues of course.
Well I doubt you'd get that. You'd probably be derided because
currently there is no movement that uses the Usenet forums as a medium
(that I know of). Also there's very little to distinguish your posts
from all the other "art" out there. However if you were to print it
off, frame it and stick it in a gallery as a break through piece of
post, post, post, post bullshit art then maybe you could start a new
    movement yourself, who knows?
