I was a bit puzzled too, but decided it felt right to do so, I was just
getting one of those paranoid bad feelings I'd **** up, rather than get
away with a silly little mistake. Trusting my instincts has always
    worked out for the best.

    Done now anyway. :)
The trip back was ok, a good head clearer.

You know the one thing you can *never* joke about on here is how
    fast/slow other people are!
In the Vosges. The car doing the U-turn.
Ah, yes. That probably *was* the closest moment of the week
    Wish I'd seen that.

We had lunch there before going up the col.
You'd have to be pretty unlucky to find a bad road in the Alps. It's
    all fantastic.

You know, I'd actually forgotten about that! It's brought a big smile
    to my morning - cheers.

Course, I didn't think it so funny at the time.

    Oh, _that_ car. Yes.
Just staying upright on that road was bad enough without oncoming
    2-wheeled tractors.
Surprisingly drama-free, actually, as he'd obviously seen it at the
last moment and decided to just run with it straight rather than
taking avoiding action. Was only an inch or two high. I was only
watching him 'cos I'd spotted it late too.

How about ignoring instinct and following common sense i.e slow down a
bit and continue enjoying the holiday. If others **** off into the
distance, who cares. IMHO you should alsways try and make a holiday
    your own.

Seriously mate this isn't mean't as critisism but if I'm correct I do
think it's a real shame you felt the need to cut your holiday short.

It wasn't about speed, more about not being able to read the road very
well, as that part of my brain seemed to have just gone to sleep, after
seven days out on the bike already i9 was probably just getting tired &
    making silly mistakes.
No, it was cool, Instead I came home 3 days earlier than I could have
and had a few days chilling out locally, which was a wonderful way to
end a great week off, and meant I wasn't knackered when I returned to
    work on Tuesday.

Er ... could you pencil us in very provisionally for summer 2007?
Plan is to do the Dolomites and beyond. Oh, and say hi to Jude for us!

I'll certainly say hello to J, but if you think I can even begin to
plan for next year, let alone the one after that, you've got another
    think coming.

Having said that, we've just arranged at least four weeks of our next
    ski season - l'Alpe d'Huez 4/3-25/3 and a families holiday to Flaine
    1/4-8/4.

Thing was that, however un-bothered you were about not keeping up, you
were actually pushing it, I suspect. In any event, you were never more
than a minute or so behind us at our catch-up stops. So you'd probably
been riding at max concentration a lot more than you're used to.
I still think you should have stuck with us on the Thursday and hot
the pool, as we did about three o'clock, then gone on to the channel
the next day, but as you say we'd already had a good week, so it's not
    that you missed _very_ much.

<g> We've just booked the last week in February in Wengen. We'll
probably only manage one week next year and thought it was time we
    tried Swiss skiing.

Not a bad place, some quite decent off-piste possibilities if you look
for them, but also very much a mountain bar/restaurant culture. Last
run down usually involves stopping for beer at two or three different
    bars on the way :)
