It only works if you did the Spectrum thing when you were younger.

I wasn't sure how to feel on seeing that I had owned[1] most of the games
    shown.

[1] I use the term loosely.

  10. Must be specifically Spectrum only, as that's one of the few computers[1] I
    didn't have.

[1] And I mean popular computers, before any smart arses respond by asking
how many Pyrex Goggle Blaster 5000's I owned.

    Pet? Vic20? Commodore64?
    TRS80?
    Apple IIe? Apple Lisa?
    Atari 400? Atari 800?
    ZX80? ZX81? Jupiter Ace?
Acorn Atom? BBC Micro? Acorn Electron?
    380Z? 480Z?
    some-brand MSX?
    Tangerine? Osbourne?

all fairly popular - you had the lot, did you?

Just an Acorn Electron followed by an Apple IIe (Europlus) for me.

I've still got the Electron, but they seem to go for **** all on e-bay.

I sold the apple, plus twin 5.25" floppy drives, monitor and wide carriage
daisywheel printer for £20 years ago and I didn't even solve "Cranston
Manor" before it went (although there is anecdotal evidence that it wasn't
    possible to solve it).

  13. Of course not, there again to me that lot's mostly Goggle Blasters.

    If it helps I had...

    Acorn Electron
    BBC Master 128
    Acorn Archimedes
    C64
    MSX
    Amiga 500
    Amiga 1200
    Various PCs from 486 onwards

    Plus consoles from 8-bit on.

that's 'cos Electron's were shit - no-one really remembers them with
    fondness.
I always wanted an Apple II, but by the time I could afford one,
    things had moved on somewhat.

Blimey. I went from BBC Model B -> IBM XT followed by 80x86 machines.
Then again I was a late starter to this home computing malarky.

    486? That's practically brand new.

My Apple II was followed by an HP 286 with 512Kb of RAM and a 10Mb hard
    disk.

Then a Compaq 286 Laptop (which I've still got and which still works) with
640Kb RAM and a 20Mb hard disk (or maybe it was a 40Mb, I forget).

    Then a IBM PS2 386 with 2Mb of RAM!

    which one?

    8-bit wise, I had:

ZX81, Acorn Atom (my first "professional" computer), ZX Spectrum,
Yamaha MSX, and a Vic20 on long-term loan. I also did some
    quasi-commercial (games, ZX80 machine-code) programming on a Jupiter
Ace (not a lot of difference at the metal from a ZX81, really).
well, you're getting a bit out of the spirit of the things here. I
still have my A1200 - made me a lot of money that little box did -
    sentimental value.
I had a no-brand Pong machine, and an Atari VCS - always wanted a
Colecovision, but never got one. We've got (in current operation) 1
    PSone, 2 x PS2s, a Gamecube, and a Megadrive. I think there's an 8-bit
    Sega console somewhere too.

no, but they weren't very good, were they?

Could have been worse - you could have had an Oric.

Very true, but they were reasonably good for learning to program. You could
type properly because they didn't have the crappy Spectrum keyboard and they
just seemed a bit more, well, friendly than the C64.

I'll happily admit the games weren't up to much though. I mean, I had an
Electron at home and still used to borrow a BBC from school every weekend to
    play "Elite"[1].
As I said I got the Apple after the Electron, wowed by the facts that ...

    1. It had 64Kb of memory.
    2. It had twin floppy drives.
    3. It was free.

It always seemed a bit more primitive than the Electron though, just little
things like there only being an upper-case character set.

I kept it for a year or so, but I was getting more into Pascal rather than
Basic and the only Pascal compiler I could find for the Apple was a crock of
shit. So I moved on to a cheapy 286 and Borland Turbo Pascal.

[1] I recall somebody at the time asking the computer teacher if he had any
good games for the Spectrum. His answer was, "Yes, drill a hole through it,
tie some string through the hole and then swing it round your head shouting,
    'WHEEEEE!'".
