The BIG issue for me is when 'safety' gear is forced on us by law but
may not actually be as safe as it could be (and I have a helmet
construction demo given to me at Crowthorne to thank for that). :-(
<quick Google> Ah, that Peter Gleave.

Any helmet is safer than no helmet. No matter what bollocks someone may
spout, that's the undeniable truth of the matter. Some helmets are
safer than others, this is true.

  3. The builder in Warrington? The utter bastard.

I was unaware of this change in the terminology having always, and will
always, referred to them as crash helmets, but I take it he's a
journo/author of some sort and started it off in some scribbling.

Indeed, and I always wore one and before they were mandatory.
That's what I was talking about. And the legislation forces to wear
what someone thinks is the safest rather than what might actually be
the safest (inappropriate tests etc). Is the SHARP testing showing
some unexpected results? What of all the pre SHARP testing that we
    were sold helmets by?

Peter is one of the most successful salesmen the bike trade has ever
known. He was the man behind Lintek Gleave, he's owned a couple of
successful bike shops, imported clothing ranges, was the man behind the
initial import and marketing of FM helmets, owned a bike trade
wholesale cash and carry in Hoddesdon, worked as a sales and marketing
consultant for a number of major companies within the trade and now
also organises golf matches for a bike related charity as well. He's
very high profile in the bike trade and I used to work alongside him a
few years back when he was doing consultancy work for a firm I was with.

Peter introduced the term 'Safety helmet' at one of our sales meetings
and insisted we only used that term when selling them. We were also
told to stress the importance of using this term to dealers as the
market I was selling to at the time was mainly the lower value budget
end, and it was normally mummy who paid for her offspring's bike kit.
Mummy didn't want to think of little Johnny crashing, but she wouldn't
mind if he had a safety helmet on.

When Peter introduces something it usually sticks around. Surprisingly,
we did find sales of our helmets increased after we started calling the
    safety helmets.

  7. Point of order here. Lintek wa a business in its own right, run and
owned by one Larry Riches. PG took him over.

That's why I didn't say he was the man behind Lintek, but the man
    behind Lintek Gleave.

  13. You wouldn't like driving/riding in Spain then. They start to pull out,
put the indicator on and never look. It's rules of the racetrack. Plod
are quite strict here about indicators and sometimes one sees overhead
signs saying "indicator campaign". I think this makes folks think that
indicate is all they have to do.
