Brand new 600 Hornet, making sound like a high speed woodpecker when under
acceleration, increases with speed as revs rise.Makes no noise at constant
revs,or on the overrun.Seems to run fine, just with this tap tap tap when
under load.Any ideas as to what it is.Cheers.

  2. Sounds like it's pinking (or pinging, as the colonials would say).
Pinking occurs when the engine is very hot, the fuel air mixture is
lean, or there is some very hot glowing bit inside the combustion
    chamber...

Pinking sounds like a loose valve, it has a metallic sound. You could
try a higher octane grade of petrol to see it the sound stops...

Alternatively, you could carefully remove the sparking plugs, and look
at the porcelin insulator's nose. If the engine is pinking, you'll see
little black specks that look like pepper sticking to the porcelin
    which will be very white...

New motors do tend to run hot, and I've even had a brand new motor
begin to diesel and it idled too fast with the ignition switch off
until it ran out of fuel...

The bike does this from stone cold, first thing in the morning.Have also
tried superunleaded fuel to no avail.Does sound like tappets though ,as you
say,but only during an increase in throttle opening.Dealer is getting it
back to sort it out ,I just wanted to go there armed with some idea of what
is wrong so I don't get fobbed off.
    Many thanks for your reply.
