    Yes, I said 2005.

    That gives time to save :=}

    Ok, I am willing to go for a DFV#

    The idea is to get up to the NordKapp in Norway during the June of 2005.
    The NordKapp is the most northerly point you can get to in mainland
    Europe by road (yes yes, picky buggers , there is another headland that
    sticks out marginally more but you have to walk) I don't neccisarily
    intend to be at the Cape for the longest day but I would like to be
    over the Artic Circle for it.

    Friday ferrys from Newcastle are best as they deposit you in
    Bergen(direct) on the Saturday afternoon. This means we could make
    a few miles that day. Bergen is not really worth stopping at, you can
    see the bst bits in about an hour. It may be best to return from Bergen
    and stay the night then instead.

    Wednesday Ferrys also get to Bergen for the mid afternoon but via
    Stravanger and Haugsand. Actaully come to think of it that is probably the best
    as the 21st June in 2005 is a Tuesday so that gives more time to cross
    the Artic Circle if we left on the 15th.

    I will produce route maps of recommended routes to nightly stops until
    Trondheim so we would not need to stick together all day.

    From Trondheim it is a bit of a slog butas a group should be more enjoyable.

    After the NordKapp there are 2 possibilities , drop back to Bergen or drop
    through Finland/Estonia/Latvia/Lithuania/Poland and either try and get
    a ferry back from Denmark or back into Norway for Stravanger.

    Anyone interested please email me for future referenc.(Like around Dec
    2004)

    So, the BIG ONE, costs

    Ferry
    =====
    Based on current prices.

    Ferry. £160 pp return (early booking rate)
    Cabin. £60 pp return (inside but above car deck, you don't want below
    car deck as it is noisy).
    Bike. £60 return.

    So for 1 person on 1 bike £280 return if a pillion add £220.

    I would hope they give discount for groups (they do a great all in car rate)

    Accomodation in Scandanavia.
    ============================

    I won't tent it again as unpacking/packing on a daily basis is a pain,
    I suggest the use of Hytters and Stugas (camping cabins).

    These range from £20-£50 per night and sleep from 4-6.
    So budget for £10 per night accomodation.

    As an emergency hostels can also be used (they are more like
    campaniles theses days) a twin room in one is £55ish but
    they do have larger rooms.

    Assuming 14 days away (Jean and I managed 3200 miles in 17 days)
    then £200 *should* cover accomodation.

    Fuel
    ====

    Petrol is expensive, around 90p/litre.
    *But* I will not be tonking it for 2 reasons
    a) View is 2 nice :=}
    b) Norwegians really do not like you speeding.

    It wil be an individual choice

    So MPG will be higher than normal ( I was doing 70mpg at one point)

    Prior to Trondheim 200-250 miles a day is envisaged.

    Once past Trondhiem speeds should pick up.

    Budget for £20-30 per day petrol.

    Thats it, if interested let me know.

    Food
    =====

    Eating out is expensive (£10 for a starter) , but the diet of
    fruit &veg with ham and cheese butties did me no harm :=}

    We can organise a couple of small cookers between us, this gives
    us something to do in the evenings as tehre is very little to
    do in Norway apart from watch the daylight.

    Beer
    ====

    Take own, wine boxes recommended and as tents will not be in use
    then we will have more space :=}

    Beer is in the region of £5-6 for a half.

    Tempting, but too far away in terms of time. I've always fancied
    doing the Cape to Cape thingummy which is NordKapp to Cape Tarifa in
    Spain.

    Fairy snuff, but I think taking it easy is the better option.
    I had heard of that, and will try it one day.

    But I am not asking for this .

    I've always fancied doing it solo i.e. not part of the run. It's
    always struck me as a little odd that you pay this money and get very
    little in return.

    Are you sure about that? I went on the piss in Bergen during
    midsummer a couple of years back and don't recall it being
    that expensive.

    Alcohol used to be expensive in Scandanavia about 10 years
    ago but IME it's got cheaper. Or maybe it's because someone
    else generally buys my drinks. Who knows.

    What's the point of that, then? Especially when they put things like "The
    aim is to drive from the very top to the very bottom of Europe - in the
    shortest possible time - without breaking any speed limits..."

    Are these possibly the dullest people imaginable?
