Your pole appears to be rather short. I suppose that's due to the cold
    temperature.

    :)

They do know that if it snows during the night that they'll have to
regularly knock the snow off the tent.

Are they heating the tents up too? If so, a candle watch will be
    needed too. Heheh.

I think that's the least of their problems judging by the latest tweets.

    And today:

    13:50 "****!"

13:55 "Very tough, rutted, sheet ice roads on mountain pass. Crosswinds
made it even more difficult." (Sweller)

13:56 "100 miles in 5 hours. 3 crashes... two were me. No one hurt. Very
tiring. twitpic.com/3yanex importantly no bike damage to speak of."
    (Packer)

13:56 "Nice scenery here but I'm fed up with thinking I'm about to
become part of it. Exciting times." (Bonwick)

stephenpackeruk Aluminium panniers...excellent crash bungs. Go over on
the side and only the pannier touches down. Then it digs in and bike
    spins around!

On that map you've done, you've used the visitors centre as a marker for
the circle. I think the circle itself is slightly south of that - where
the road loops back south after Storforshei, the northern tip of the
loop just crosses into the arctic.

Could be wrong though, but I'm going by the map on the visitor centre's
    web site.

That's what I found years ago. BMW Airheads with FOAD crash bars were the
best solution. Like skis, just not quite so good.
    This sort of thing

    though one runs this risk

and for amusement look at the last photo on this page, extra power!

Notional innit, and I was able to grab that photo off Google Maps as a
significant objective. If they get there, they will certainly have
    fulfilled plan A.

I just tried to follow latitude 66.5622 round until it crossed the E6.
I'm sure you are correct. I'll see if I can identify your position, or
stick up a WSG84 lat, long for your point and I'll tweak the sql field.

  11. "Modify the rotor so it has a V-belt PULLEY attached to it. You can use
a toothed belt also. Be careful not to damage the taper. The only
thing you really need is that taper, and a pulley affixed VERY squarely
and sturdily to it. I like the pulley to be SMALLER in diameter than
the new alternator's pulley, so that the engine will run the alternator
at a bit faster than engine rpm."

Eh? I don't bloody think so.

Either Wikipedia is wrong, or I've misinterpreted 66.5622 incorrectly,
but my blob seems pretty much on the mark (though the building in the
    photo may not be).

In any case, they better achieve it on this trip, it's only going to get
more difficult (for quite a while).

"The position of the Arctic Circle is not fixed, but directly depends on
the Earth's axial tilt, which fluctuates within a margin of 2° over a
40,000 year period,[2] notably due to tidal forces resulting from the
orbit of the Moon. The Arctic Circle is currently drifting northwards at
a speed of about 15 m (49 ft) per year, see Circle of latitude for more
    information."

He's pretty much on the money, if slightly East. It's moot anyway due to
annual shift. Once they reach Rognan they are past its actual position,
whatever it is. Pity no one is using google latitude, much easier to
track them if the have a signal.

ISTR that someone in UKRM did just that some years ago then the remains
languished for a very long time. Petrolcan? might have been an Oilhead
    though.

Indeed. I think Ogden is correct in that the E6 loop he mentions does
cut the circle (give or take 15 metres per year).

    Final push tomorrow then.

    So did I.
Good point. "Alpine start" tomorrow then perhaps for the final push to
    the circle.
