Me too initially, but looking at the times, it doesn't appear they've
    done any riding since then.

I didn't bend the barrel, just smashed the head and damaged the internal
    oilfeed.

I just punched some rough numbers into a sunset calculator for 66N14E
and it gave me 0921 for sunrise and 1701 for sunset.

Or not. That was 66N14W and the wrong time zone.

66N14E is 0829 rise and 1608 set, local time (at UTC+1), I think.

A local weather forcast site[1] that also indicates sun- & moonrise &
-set shows that is fairly correct.

But at such latitudes twilight is much longer, given the nearly
horizontal path of the sun across the sky, so it shouldn't get seriosly
    dark until after 5 pm.

That's pretty much how we feel. About a hundred and eight miles or so
give or take and we have done it. About the same distance as today
    really.

Today very tiring, at one point I couldn't take 120 away from 155,
    just too tired to think.

Both drops were stupid, one was because my foot slipped from the peg
and I put it back on... the gear lever. 2nd to 1st at 30mph will lock
the back, especially on ice. The second about two minutes later was
because I was distracted by scenery and wasn't watching where I was
going... looked up, saw a ridge in the ice and reacted... and then
down and sliding around. Roads are too slippery to walk on, thank god
    we bought studs.

Out on the town now, beer about 8 or 9 quid a pint. Ouch.

    Tomorrow... more news.

What, you think you can beat it?
Harumpf. The coldest I've been this year is 54F, and that was in the
ocean. Currently, it's 73F and not a cloud in the sky. Mind, I can
actually _see_ snow in the mountains while I'm at the beach, but no
way am I going anywhere near it.

*cough* she. after a text update from Andy. the use of "they're"
should have given it away...I guess I should identify myself in the
tweets. I remember on an earlier one (and didn't put AB to confuse
    folks even further).
    yep that's the one.
I didn't think so, though going back and looking on a screen larger
than an iphone you could be right. however, it also fitted in with the
times of the text messages so I guess they stopped shortly after that.

The lack of scenic road photos is more evidence of the difficulty.
I think the relevant tweet of the day was: "****!"
Bunch of masochistic bastards, ain't they?

Andy's latest update conveys things in a bit more detail.

"The riding is without doubt the toughest I've ever encountered. The
good bits are on ice about 1" thick, the bad bits are 2" thick with 6"
diameter holes through to the Tarmac. Lunar landscape just about sums
    it up."

Same as Paris then, near enough. I bet that hurts more than crashing.
    Looking forward to it.

That's as maybe, but would you want to be walking around an crater-
pocked ice-rink after sunset, let alone trying to ride a motorcycle
    across it?

    I wouldn't.

    1) Spotting obstacles is tricky enough in broad daylight, let alone when
    visibility is poor

    2) Daylight is relative to cloud cover - thick cloud during the day
renders visibility as poor as twilight with no cloud, and I don't think
the sky has exactly been bright blue so far

    3) It's fine riding during twilight, but if you've made minimal progress
for the last hour and you're hoping to find somewhere to sleep you don't
want to be squander the last bit of daylight keeping a bike upright when
you could be hunting for a pit-stop. They have camping kit, but clearly
the preference is for somewhere warm and dry with the tents for use
where necessary, not just out of blind obstinance.

They are ready for the final push and probably already on their way it
seems. Not bad after a night on the town.

    Best of luck...
I can imagine. My recent Salisbury Plain trip was probably similar
levels of (lack of) grip, being a thin layer of slimy mud on chalk.
Constant eyes-on-stalks concentration & having to jab a leg down every
few yards to prop up 230kgs+ of bike is incredibly tiring, & I only did
it for around four hours. You have my utmost respect for doing that
    several days on the trot.
What tyre pressures are you using? I'd drop them to around 15psi I
    think.
