My first domestic net connection was uucp - twice a day, automatic.
    Luxury back then!

    The late 80s.

Usenet was flown over to Oz on tape because the teeny tiny pipe wasn't
    enough.

It was flowing over the pipe when I first got onto usenet, a 2MB pipe.
Which worked cos it was only news, mail, and ftp. Although if you
wanted something big on ftp you used one of the ftp->mail gateways
to split the file up and mail it to you.

For software updates, magtapes was the way to go.

Yeah, OK, I heard about that. Still low latency on your own NNTP server.
I was thinking of the mainframe days, JES2 and its friends did most of
    the work then.
Ditto I think. People were always whinging about bandwidth then; only
dialup users do that now :-# 56K? Looxury!
This worked well for a long time, until IBM realised it wasn't getting
    its tapes back :)

DG used to send us updates on tape.

I'd leave them sitting for a couple of weeks, till the first patch tape
came in, and sometimes till the 2nd one came in.

Usually they were a bit small to use for backups though.

    - remembering 6 hour Saturdays at one magtape per half hour to back up
the *huge* 500mb disk... And restores took twice as long, nice little
    earner at double time!

Redirect the tape to /dev/null - makes the backup much quicker ...[1]
