not even a newbie to biking...

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by news.binternet.com, Oct 21, 2005.

  1. Hi all,

I've been driving a car for over 10 yrs and I am considering switching to a
bike for my daily commute into London. I have no clue about the bike world
and would like to know where/how to get started so that I can give it
    serious consideration.

Some immediate questions that come to mind:

    - Do I need a license to ride a bike?
    - How much would I need to budget for a decent bike? (I drive an M3 so would
like to get a decent bike)
    - How much do I budget for other gear (helmets, leather suit, etc)

Any other information that you feel will be helpful will be gratefully
    received.

    Thank you.

Stick to the school bus until you are old enough to get a moped, sonny.

Most bikes 600cc+ can piss on your M3, so don't worry about having such a
    slow car.

As for the rest of your questions, have a look around here:

    Not all, just some.
Excellent stuff. Good boy. I wish you well.

Welcome to ukrm, you may well find you share much in common with us.

Loads of stuff in the ukrm ffaq but feel free to ask the same old tired
fucking questions again and again and again.

How much is a piece of string?

Based upon thousands of bikeryears of collective knowledge the general
opinion around here is that you shouldn't invest too much on your first
venture for a number of reasons, including but not restricted to: "you
WILL drop it" and "you may find it far too dangerous."

A a drizzle of your favourite olive oil, a seriously light dusting of
caster sugar and a really good grind of pepper transforms a supermarket
bought grilled beefsteak tomato into something almost edible.

    p.s.
and having seen your other post, I suggest you read the ukrm cbt, quick.

Not sure if I ever challenged anything like that specifically when I had my
500V...but probably would as in many speed ranges it would surprise quite a
    few Beemer owners.
I guess that would cover almost anything from 0 to anything reasonably fast,
    then.
Only exception is it doesn't really go to any high speeds >100 at all but
its still one very good bike considering it to be a "commuter" vehicle, not
    a sportbike.

In summary, its surpisingly perky against most everyday 'stationary'
traffic, like Mr 'I went to London and all I got was this lousy M3'.

No. There are a whole load of scams going around about licences. You
need to be really on the ball to avoid being fooled by them.

    Seems like a sensible option.
Buy a few bike magazines, they sell them in magazine shops.
You are taking the piss now aren't you? Of course you need a licence, CBT
first, then test... Budget £350 for "crash" course n test.
£1000 will certainly do it. If you think an M3 is "fast" then you'll shit
yerself on anything above a 600cc. (My shite 12 year old CBR1000F does 0-60
in 3.0 seconds and cost £550)
My AGV helmet cost £35 off eBay. Leather jacket from Stuarts Leathers in
    Preston £75.
Try to avoid solid objects when you come off at 150mph+
Don't mention it, it was a pleasure.

I'm sorry. I always thought they were horrid looking things
Not sure I've seen a new M3 but I quite like the rest of the range. Not
that I'd ever have one mind.
