    Guzzi runs.

Found the problem, fixed it and the little fucker fired and ran first
    time.

This link wire had been rubbing against the frame and was shorting
intermittently. Enough to cause the sparks to go all over the place but
    was hidden from view.

    This probably didn't help either:
    http://www.sweller.dynalias.org/images/guz_coil.jpg

Made a new link, cleaned everything up and took it for a twenty mile run
and all was fine but still doesn't feel /right/

Perhaps it's just me - I'll still send the amplifier and coils off for
    testing.

  2. Heh, probably not the best electrical contact on the left coil then.

  3. It might be an idea to use 12v coils, IMHO.

    Or am I missing something?

Perhaps it feels lacklustre after having driven such a powerful machine
    as a Smart car?

  9. Well, yes, I figured that. It's just that the thought of Lucas electrics
and twice as many coils as you need, plus (obviously) twice as many
connections, is n't the best way of doing things.

eh? The Guzzi uses two coils anyway. If you remember there are two
points, two coils, two condensers - in effect two single cylinder
    ignition systems.

The connection thing isn't strictly true either - as it has the same
    number of connections as OE.

As you know doing the points on a Guzzi - and keeping both sets in time
and gaped properly - is a PITA. Remember the joy of accessing the
distributor thing [1] hidden under the frame rail? I used to pull the
distributor, gap the points on the bench and retime on refitting the
distributor as it was quicker and easier.

The Rita boxes are usually a lot more reliable than the OE setup.
Certainly fit and forget. My problem was I did fit and forget and a
small wire frayed against the frame. Such is life.

[1] It's not a distributor, just looks a bit like one one.

  11. That's true
Heh. yes, I remember. I've still got a genuine Guzzi points adjustiong
tool. I use it to stir paint with these days.

I didn't even fit the one on the Mille, just forgot about it. In fact,
the only electrical problem I had on that was a connector that took the
power from the alternator up front hidden under the tank somewhere. It
would j-jiggle loose and the charging warning light would come on.

The first time it happened I convinced myself it was regulator failure
and got a replacement . IIRC I still have the old regulator somewhere.
Probably no good to you though as it is some weird type (Saprisa) not
    used on many models.

I converted the Guzzi to Saprisa from the OE Bosch as it's much more
reliable (no bushes, just two solid lumps and a regulator) and, IIRC, has
    a higher output.

If you still have it I'd be interested.

I'm pretty sure I didn't remember it and pass it on when I sold the
Mille, but the panniers in the loft. I may be some time...

Aren't grey cells amazing sometimes. There it still was in the Oxford
panniers that have been on various trips on the Tart for the last two
years. A fat lot of good it would have been (except as some kind of
    talisman somehow).

Still in a plastic bag labelled "Regolatore 28703800". Distinguishing
features: Ref 7372, W&A 26?, V=14. This is the old one, which the
substitution test suggests was still functioning perfectly when removed.

Also a Facet Oil Pressure Switch 7.0033/F. It looks newish, and I can't
see me carrying round unless it was (prone to going leaky as I remember)
unless this is a leaky but functioning one IYSWIM.

Shall I jiffy bag them on receipt of an address ?
