What's the processor of choice nowadays? 486/50 or 66?

Due to a gift I've received, I'd like summat with a PCI x16 slot,
    whatever one of those is.

And all the RAM I can eat. I've no idea why, other than more is
    better, obviously.

    I'm currently sporting:

    Core 2 Duo E2160 @ 2.4GHz, on GA81865GME mobo wiv 2 Gig of RAM (don't
know what type) and an NVidia GeForce 6600 graphics card.

It scores 3.8 on that Win7 Experience index.

Worth a whole new PC, or a bit of jiggery-pokery inside? New mobo?
    More RAM

I need a new post thing to attach the CPU heatsink/fan to the mobo
anyway. One of those push, click and twist jobbies.

I presume these are available separately?

I've just supplied a Core i5 with 4GB ram and an intel HD graphics chipset.
One has to admit to a degree of envy, it makes everything happen pretty
    quickly.

They're quite popular, by the sound of it.

The lad's running an AMD Phenom II X4 965, quad core 3.4GHz overclocked
to about 3.85. It's certainly quicker than the Pentium II 2.5GHz Dell
that I get to use :-(

You might want to check what the lowest score is and address that.
    Graphics card? RAM? HDD?
    Yes.

Send a begging email to that nice Mr Brownz. He's probably using loads of
    them as desk ornaments.

i3 530 (cheap) or i5 750 (more spensiv, but betterer)

4 GB RAM (enough for anything desktoppy)

I've got 4 GB RAM in an XP machine and if I try to alter large areas of a
picture with 'content aware healing brush' Adobe CS5 tells me that it's run
out of RAM. I'm looking at a new machine - unless someone can show me how to
get XP to see more RAM.

Add /3GB to the boot.ini. Google is your friend if that makes no sense.

That's not exactly going to help much in SD's scenario with the
    graphics card being the culprit.

It probably won't help with any other posts I didn't reply to with it
    either.

  13. Unless you go 64 bit, XP will not see more than 4 Gig of RAM and
realistically it will only see 3 Gig. You can set a flag in your
boot.ini that will display 4 Gig but that last Gig will only be used
by core processes, not by applications. It doesn't hurt to set up the
/3G flag as that directs that RAM to be used by said core processes,
but to be quite honest if your are pushing limits on CS anyway, you
probably won't notice a lot of difference.

Just throw some money at Dell for a whole new machine. It'll save you a
lot of arse-ache in the long run. Unless you're a nerd like Champ and
    like the challenge.

The PC I've got sitting whirring away under the telly seems to do the
job, and only cost me the thick end of a grand a year and a half or so
    ago.

This i7 920 still seems to be running well 18 months on.

12 GB here, and could use more.

    Overkill for Dodger.

I'd hazard a guess that's because you're running multiple VMs, rather
than mostly doing desktoppy type stuff.

    Overkill for anyone.
Well, occasionally it's been known to run two domain controllers, two
mailbox servers, two CAS/HT servers, two DPM servers and a couple of
clients. And a router. And my usual Linux VM.

But other than that, it's just desktoppy type stuff.

The machine under my tv owes me nothing.

Mind you, I do run a personal accounting system where all capital outlay
is amortised over a period of about six seconds.

Better off with a dedicated Quadro or FirePro vga card for CS5, summat
with a large amount of frame buffer memory makes life a lot more
    pleasant.

<Pats box with Quadro 6000 that is currently sat on the desk doing
nowt.... 6GB of FBM and 448Cuda Cores, I really must plug it into
    something and fire up seti>

    I recently bought a Core i5 with 4gb of RAM and a RADEON 5850. Win7
installed too, but I wish to **** I'd got the Win Premium now instead of
home "something". I never thought about the speed, (I knew it'd be fast) but
when I compare it to my "music" computer it's fucking light years ahead.
