    This seems a suitable point to acknowledge your stepping aside from the
    machine I'm using, which with the addition of a suitable graphics card
    and couple of HDDs is providing sterling service still. And it is
    still enormously quieter than the barn-sized thing it replaced, for
    which Elly is suitably grateful, on a regular basis ;-)

    Well, I got new mobo, more, better, RAM, and a new heatsink/fan.

    Plonked it all in, wired it up, and Win7 refuses to load. It does its
    little diagnostics nonsense for ages, then says it has no solutions.

    BIOS wilfully ignores CD/DVD drive, too.

    Does it matter which SATA channel drives are plugged into?

    Found it now. Offers to reinstall Win7.

    I shall move everything important to somewhere else first.
    Thank goodness for system restore. All back as was.

    Will have another fiddle at the weekend.
