We don't like to talk about magic here betty. We prefer to call it by
    it's proper name... Religion.

  6. I haven't. : ) Touches wood. But seriously in the last 3 years it
seems like I read a post about Betty crashing. Some her fault, some
not. But it seems like she attracts crashes like some sort of magnet.
I really would hate to see some harm come to her. Maye a Can-am spider
would be the perfect thing. I know if I wasn't a 100kg bloke I would of
dropped my bikes heaps more but I have (luckily) been able to pull them
back upright. So no offence Betty (even though harsh week is still in
full swing) please get something that you will crash less. FWIW I have
a friend who is 5'6" and 55kg and she rides a 1999 SV650 and she seems
to crash an awful lot less than you.

  7. I've live long enough to know better than to piss off redheads. Even
have some scars to prove it. : )

I reckon Betty would be better off on a CBR600RR or something
ridiculously light. With some bar risers so she can tour on it.

What.. something ridiculously light won't be adversely affected by the
    wind you reckon? *boggle*

  9. Idiot. When you've already dug yourself into a sufficiently deep hole,
the least intelligent thing you can do is to keep digging.

IIRC BB has reported 6 incidents, only one of which could fairly be
called a crash and that was the first. One didn't involve a motorcycle
at all, and the others were stationary (or near stationary) drops.

  10. In any event, the SV's are famously light. The CBR600RR weighs a tad
under 160kg (current model) or a tad over (earlier models). The SV650S
    weighs around 170kg.

I dispute that a bike being heavy or light really makes any differnce at
all. Sure you might be more prone to overbalance on a heavier bike on a
lighter bike, but I've seen people go arse over tit at 0kph after
overbalancing on RGVs, CBR150s and GPX250s. Its got a lot to do with
not having your feet properly planted and not anticipating the need to
bear the weight of the bike, and bugger all to do with the actual weight
of the bike you're sitting on. If Fraser actually knew enough about
bikes to be offering this sort of advice he'd have suggesting a bike
with a lower seat, not a higher seat.

    Yeah but the CBR
    a) has an over-inch-taller seat (with probably another inch less padding!)
    b) is probably fudging the weight figures (like all the SS weight and power
    figures!)
    c) is a Honda.

Sure it may be OK on paper but you've gotta' WANT to ride it!

    Yeah but where's she riding?
That SV is BikerBetty's sole transport and she doesn't just ride it on flat
    roads on sunny days.
She rides in torrents of sleet and on snow, gravel, dirt, mud (and even near
willy willys) and she's clocked up a huge number of miles in the quite short
time that she's had a bike.
She's ridden to Phillip Island twice and Mildura once, and she regularly
does 300-500km rides just to get out of the house!
She's crammed a hell of a lot of miles sine she was just "Betty".

My GS500 was heavier than the SV - and the SV actually handles better in
wind than the GS did, coz the smaller fairing doesn't turn it into a giant
That's what I thought as well - at 820mm I doubt that I'd get more than
tiptoes on the ground - great in windy weather! ;-) Considering I had the SV
lowered 25mm and I actually get slightly better feetses-to-ground contact
than I did on the GS (the SV seat being narrower and all), I can't see that
getting a taller "sail" would be of any benefit, even if it is lighter.

Besides, for someone of my weight & strength, there's not a lot of diff
between a 160kg or 180kg bike. Of course, after hauling my own arse around
on these bloody crutches for 6 weeks I reckon I'll be able to lift a tractor
    one-handed.
    heh heh

  15. My friend has done 2 round Australia trips starting in Brisbane. She
has ridden far north QLD and Tasmania in June (which I told her and her
boyfriend they were fucking insane.) She has dropped it once in the
driveway when she first got her licence and high sided it a few months
ago at low speed and broke the clutch and gear levers. All up she has
done over 100,000ks in 3 years.

  16. At 155kg dry it is a super light bike. But yeah seat height might make
a big diff if you are seriously vertically challenged. Go the Can-Am Betty.

I think "my friend is better than your friend" arguments need to remain
in the playground personally. That means no beer Johno!
