    <shrug> Maybe they don't work?

How else would you have seen the original?

Then, just to make your point, you repost the whole lot of crap, but
    under a different thread name. <puzzled look>

  3. Well, I've never used Outlook Express, but as far as I know its Blocked
Sender list works very well and is easy to manage. Thunderbird won't let
you completely block a sender in a newsgroup; the best you can do is
mark all of their messages as read. And you can easily block senders in
Pan but I've never found a way to unblock them. AFAIK you can't have a
killfile if you are using Google Groups.

You did notice that Knobdoodle corrected the original subject line to do
the right thing and conceal who won? I would have deleted the 'hrc' too,
    but that's just quibbling.

PaulpULVITZKA persistently posts the MotoGP results to this ng long
before those who recorded the event have a chance to watch the race.
Sticking {SPOILER} at the beginning of the subject line and then
immediately continuing with the spoil is both rude and ineffectual. If
he doesn't care that he is giving offence by doing this, and insists on
continuing, he deserves to be killfiled.

Without wishing to make too much of a big deal of it, I think you're still
of the mindset that killfile = punish.
A killfile is merely a convenience to help readers choose what to be
presented with and what to pass over.
The only way to try to punish someone in a newsgroup is to read and reply to
their posts; the exact opposite of ignoring them.

I assume you've already worked out the answer to your question Cam but is
there a simpler, more effective way I could've made that point?

  6. I agree with all of that. As I have had occasion to say before, I think
you're confusing me with someone else. There is nothing in what you are
replying to, or anything else I have ever posted here, that would lead
anyone to conclude I think 'killfile = punish'.

My mistake then. "deserves" mustn't mean what I assumed it meant.

    Did the point need making?

    Paul is a nuisance.

For whatever reason, he feels it necessary to post a "spoiler" when he
    feels like it. <shrug>

We are all entitled to deal with that nuisance in whatever way we think
    is reasonable.

Somehow, even just discussing him and his posts seems a wast of time to
me.... kind of in the same league as having a picnic in Australia and
wasting your breath complaining about the flies.

If you choose to use a kill file, or some other filtering so you don't
see his posts, good luck to you.

Personally, I can manage to ignore him quite adequately, simply by going
    to the next posting.

In light of the previous discussions on the topic; yes.
[sigh] This isn't about Paul (is THAT his name?), it's merely about
how useful killfiles are for eliminating noise.
Me too. Make me wonder why you're doing it.
And yet you couldn't just do the same with my post.

  10. Well, 'deserves' can be made to mean what you assumed, so I can see how
the confusion can arise, but strictly it shouldn't be used that way.
Punishment can be deserved, but so can praise, rewards, help, lots of
    things.

Perhaps I should have said he merits being in a killfile. His actions
are sufficient to warrant killfiling him. Or something.

    Oh, OK.
Paul is a waste of space.

OTOH, while I have, at various times, had reservations as to some of
your opinions, I have considered you to be a reasonably sensible
aus.moto type, with more than a passing interest is stuff to do with
    motorcycles.

So, I entered into a discussion about your post. <shrug>

    Please to get breathing?
If that is your desire, then I guess I could manage it.

    Is it?

Well; you had an odd and fairly unfocussed whinge and then refused to
explain how I could have made the point any better but if you wanna' call
    that a discussion then OK.
You're the one driving this whole bizarre "discussion" Cam. You wanna' have
a big sulky hissyfit you just go ahead!

Aren't you the one who started it Clem? Did you expect no-one to
    respond?
Up to this point, half the posts in this thread appear to be yours,
    half that numer Cam's.

    Started what Theo?
I made a post about killfiles (and used hatz's post as an example). Is
    there a problem with that?
(Cam seems to think there is but he hasn't really said what it is.
Andrew pointed out that I was sloppy in that I should've edited out
hrc but he seemed otherwise OK with it.
Other than that all I've done is respond to replies.
I thought that's pretty-much how this thing worked; am I doing
    something wrong?

Other than enticing me to open a posting which I had already chosen
not to open from the original, because it came from you and not him?
    No, not really.
Did Cam do something wrong in pointing this out to you? No, not at
    all.

Yes; a glance at the content would be required to get the point I was
    making.
Pointing what out? Pointed out that I used an edited version of a
hatz post to make a point about killfiles, or pointed out that hatz's
posts are easy to ignore but my satitised version was so irksome I had
    to be called to task?
Buggered if I know what's going on.

No, but if you use something like Newsproxy/Nfilter (http://nfilter.org, or I
cam email a copy to anyone who wants it), then you can set up all sorts of
filters, including scoring, so that Google Groups originated messages can be
dropped or blocked from specific newsgroups but not from others.

Its best feature is that of killing most off the spam by dropping x-posts, based
on the number of groups that you assign to it. eg. drop all articles that are
cross posted to two or more newsgroups.

Here's a copy of my Newsproxy filter list: Anything with a # in front of it is
    an inactive filter.
