In order to back up my vinyl collection on MP3

I have the record deck going into an RIAA preamp and into an Audigy2 ZS

Does anyone have any recommendations as to what software would be best
to use which might be better than the Creative recording s/w that comes
    with the sound card ?

Try Audacity. I've no idea if it's the best but I've used it to
produce MP3s from CD. The writeup says you can use it to convert
records (which I'll be trying in the future). Oh, and it's free.

I've used Goldwave (http://www.goldwave.com/) for just this task. Very
    good, also free.

    Also looks good

With around 1000 albums to copy, I suppose it's worth investing in s/w
    which will make life easier

Nice idea, but I don't have the luxury of being to take time off work,
especially at this time of year

Audio grabber, requires a plug in for click/hiss filter but free and
    works well.

I've not used it so not sure. In the actual program when in line sample
mode, click the settings button next to "reduce noise on incoming sound"
and you will be informed that you need the plug in from Algorithmix. I
believe the url is http://www.algorithmix.com - but I'm not sure which
    one it is.

You could always contact the developer (via the audiograbber site) and
    ask them.

    ah. found it...

In the actual program when in line sample mode, click the settings
button next to "reduce noise on incoming sound" and you will be informed
that you need the plug in from Algorithmix. Now click on the help button
and it tells you all the details you need to know.
