NSW: new L/P rules

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Zebee Johnstone, May 30, 2007.

  1. New P-plate and L-plate rules up at
    http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/licensing/gettingalicence/200707_lrider.html

They include the new idea that a P-plate rider will be suspended for
3 months for *any* speeding offence.

There's also no use of mobile phones, even handsfree, while the bike
ignition is switched on. It isn't clear if this means listening to
MP3s or satnav but probably does as it includes "speaker on".

Well, I suppose it means that you can listen to (use) an MP3 player, but
you can't listen to (use) a mobile phone playing MP3 files.

Similarly, a Mobile phone acting as a GPS wouldn't be allowed, while any
other (non-phone) electronic device providing GPS info would be OK.

Now, how the RTA expect this to be enforced is anybody's guess. <shrug>

Personally, I've never understood why people want to use a mobile while
actually riding. That's what answering thingies and voice mail is for.

I have a little bluetooth ear thingy that works great.
It has come in handy (the bluetooth ear thingy) on may occasions when I am
burning across town to meet someone and they call to tell me that they wont
be able to make it or would like to meet somewhere else, also instead of
useing voice mail I divert calls to my mobile. As a last resort if I miss
the call or am unable to answer it then the mobile has voice mail but this
is used as a last resort as "your call is important to us". As a small time
owner operator customer service is what keeps me in the game, and some
people detest leaving messages. I also hate returning messages just to end
up leaving another one (playing answering machine tag). The only person to
profit from this is the telcos and they don't need the extra cash.

    :p

How about a GPS that lets you answer your phone (Garmin zumo) ?

That would appear to be using the phone with a handsfree setup. So
    illegal.

The GPS can talk to you, but no one else can...
