I'm not surprised they use a fixed camera instead of a Copper with a radar
    there.....
Who'd volunteer to be the pig on the spit?

Of course they can detect speed. They take two photographs and speed is a
function of time and distance, so if you know the time delay, you only need to
calculate the distance to ascertain the speed. Establishing an accurate speed
is going to be a real bitch though.
....and it must be true because you read it on the internet!

I'll definitely have one eye on the speedo when I pass that cash
register. Maybe I should video the fecking event in case I get pinged
    for 285km/h.

I don't like referring to cops as pigs, but I simply *must* pay that
    one =)

  9. You can request D/R on the RTA web site.

The truth is starting to come out looking at today's letters:

"... I was booked about 12 months ago. About the position where the
camera is placed, I changed from the left lane to the right lane.

I wrote to the RTA to say that I certainly was not speeding and was
travelling at under the speed limit"

    and:

"As a professional driver I have also been sent an infringement
notice arising from the same camera; how is this possible in a
20-year-old garbage truck up a hill from a complete stop."

For the bus drivers ATM at least, no further action is being taken,
however Joe Average will not be listened to - _DISGUSTING IMHO_ !!!

true but as you said if you know time and distance then speed is a given

the ones in canberra have a duel purpose

they are a redlight camera and
also operate as a fulltime speed camera

I'll be going through at least two of them later today. I'll have to be
    extra careful.

Or.... is that a Freudian slip?

As long as the time is accurate it should be easy. The camera is in a fixed
position and it should be a fairly simple affair to use some natural
    markers.
They didn't have the internet when red light cameras came out, at least I
    didn't.

In the UK they print a set of markers on the road, it looks like a ladder.

    ---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---

The radar reading is not enough to convict you due to lack of accuracy.

They need 2 clear pix of you on the 'ladder' one second apart... Speed is
    calculated from that.

The Ladders make it real easy to spot a speed camera... they are pretty
    clear.

I imagine if the cameras photographed a car going through a red light which
was involved in a fatal accident, then they might take some measurements at
that time for that particular instance. Without having grid lines or similar
painted on the intersection it would be pretty difficult to calculate the
speed of every motorist caught going through the red light.. and any painted
grid would create it's own problems.
    yes they did.

Yes but establishing accurate distance measurements are the problem. they've
had red light cameras for a couple of decades now, and AFAIK they've never
    used them to calculate speed.
We have them here in Melbourne too. But they are purpose built, and have
calibrated speed measuring equipment in the road... not just calculated using
some sort of guesswork which Michael C seems to think would suffice.

You're not wrong. We have enough issues with the blue line
for the Olympic marathon course. It takes shortest, most-direct
route around any given corner, so it often sweeps diagonally
from one side of the road to the other.

The line was removed from the road in many places - across the
deck of the Harbour Bridge for example, just a few months
after the Olympics, 'cos you'd get the occasional punter who
would fixate on it and follow it diagonally across the roadway!

    He didn't.

On my last trip to Phillip Island (a couple of Easters ago) I was
bemused to see a blue line on the road, complete with a profusion of
signs saying "Blue Line Not In Use". Ahh, those Vics...
