But I didn't say 'stop violence'. I said 'why not just [say][1] "stop
violence"' in the context of making the point that the catch phrase 'stop
violence against women and children' is rather narrow and pointless, and
ignores all the men who are also victims of violence, whilst seeming to
imply that only men are perpetrators of violence.

    P
[1] inserted for clarity since context now is void

Yeah, you might want to get a second opinion from the Communist or
    Ba'ath parties about that.

Do tell ? If memory serves, Menzies' attempt to outlaw the communist

No way. It has to be a Gov't employee beating the crap out of the
perps. Anything else is just wrong.

The feds have no constitutional power to outlaw a political party in
peace-time. The States/Territories are not so limited.

My memory thinks it went to a referendum.

    * 1949 Menzies tried to ban the Communist Party but the legislation
was declared invalid by the High Court. Later he was defeated in a
    referendum.

    And Wow!
In line with his election policy, in April 1950 Menzies introduced a
Bill to ban the Communist Party in Australia. The Bill provided for
the dissolution of the party and the seizure of its assets. It also
provided that people declared by the government to be Communists would
be barred from trade union office and from employment by the
Commonwealth. Their homes could be raided without warrant by police
searching for evidence against them, and declared people would have to
prove their innocence, rather than the police having to prove their
    guilt.

In 1951 the Menzies conservative government tried to ban the party,
first by legislation that was declared invalid by the High Court, then
by referendum to try to overcome the constitutional obstacles to that
legislation, but the referendum was narrowly defeated.

    OK Both.

And therefore the question "how does one stop the violence" is not a
    non sequitur.

    "Silly old bugger!"

"Well may we say 'God save the Queen' because nothing will save the governor

Bikie gangs, Sunni gangs, Shia gangs, Taliban gangs, al-Qeida gangs,
what's the friggin difference? They're all extremists who happily
opt for sorting out their grievances via the use of violence.

    Usually.

Rumour has it that the ones in some patch clubs that are doing the
majority of the crime aren't that into motorcycles.

But they know the value of a bunch of thugs with a lot of ego invested
    in being outlaws.

I was responding to the suggestion that "Any legislation aimed at
stopping them meeting or functioning in other legal ways would then
apply to the Labor and Liberal Parties too". Whether it was successful
    or unsuccessful isn't really relevant.

I'm sure in the modern political climate the process would be much
easier. They would just need to pass legislation to outlaw or prohibit
unnamed unsavoury organisations who would then be named in a register
separate to the act itself and maintained by some ministor. Probably
throwing the phrase "links to terrorism" in which will ensure a clear
passage through parliament (who really wants to be the first
Unaustralian pollie to 'support terrorists?' by voting against such a
bill). Then it would merely be a formality of the responsible minister
updating some register of the organisations to be outlawed.

And that gives them the right to go around monstering people,
threatening Ulysses old farts, bullying all and sundry, and just
    generally adopting an intimidating demeanor?

No but it gives them the right to be called a "bikie gang" whereas the
others (without bikes) are just "gangs".
