When it puts a reserve of 130 Euros against your card before filling with
20 euros of juice, it keeps the reserve until the transaction goes through.

So, when not having the card topped up with oodles of dosh, it starts
    geting declined..... oops.

Yeah, I found that on Saturday. I had to stop using my prepaid Euro
card, and use my normal Visa debit card instead, despite the former
having over Eur90 left on it.

It's probably for foreigners only. I don't believe it's the case for me. Well,
    I've not seen it.

Yebbut, you don't use a pre-paid card do you?

I've never seen this 'reserve' thing at all. Is it the norm these days
in France? And if so, how do you know about it? I've certainly filled
up at card-operated pumps on many occasions and never had anything
    like this mentioned.

Ahh, all becomes clear. He neglected to mention the pre-paid card
    thing.\

I suspect it just applies to prepay cards. Some places do it here too
with Solo(?) cards. The pumps at Asda have a sign on them saying Solo
users should spend at least 20 quid to avoid having an amount reserved.

Perhaps I'm being dim, but how does that work?

  10. I think he means 'pre-pay' pumps.

"Jesus H Christ" if you don't mind, or try alt.chile.rec.motorcycles
    where your sort are tolerated.

OIC. So if you pre-pay less than £20 it'll charge you £20 and then
refund the difference on checkout. How does that benefit Asda?

Checkout? Don't think it's anything to do with Asda but icbw.

Sorry, I meant "on paying for the petrol". I don't see how taking too
much and then refunding it benefits the petrol company.

Just guessing, but as Solo cards are usually issued to pikeys, maybe
they reserve the max payment of 20 quid when you stick the card in to
make sure no other outstanding transactions can grab the balance while
said pikey is topping up their Nova. They then automatically issue a
refund for any difference (which can take a few days to go through).

A quick Google suggests it is just Asda that does it. At least they're
the only ones the pikeys who are too dumb to read the warning signs
    whinge about.

When you put the card in and press your code, it then says "authorised for
130 Eu", this is the same as a hotel reserving it.

Apparently it stays that way until the transaction goes through, which due
to this weekend being a UK BH, was not until Tuesday.

And neither do I , I use the word "top up" as it is a separate account
that I ... err... well top up.
