That's what I understood it to mean. Nothing to do with reserving
    money.

I'm pretty sure the retailer will get a pre-authorisation, just as hotels
do when you check in. They wouldn't want you, or an additional cardholder,
to max out the account whilst the fuel is pumped otherwise they risk being
    unpaid.

The problem lies with Bruce's bank: it should cancel the pre-authorisation
once the full transaction is completed.

*ding* This would appear to be what happened, if I understand stuff
correctly then it should have cancelled the reservation when the actual
amount used was charged, from what they say the charge did not come
    through until yesterday.

I've only ever experienced this with hotels and credit cards in the past,
you work away for a few weeks and then one day you can't pay for your
evening meal on the Newcastle Quay Side.......

Becasue that is all iy has been authorised for, as mentioned else where it
is similar to an hotel taking a swipe before letting you in.

That will be because you had enough money in the account and probably an
    overdraft limit.

I used the same card for a month around Europe last May with no issues,
but then I dumped a fair whack of dough into it before I left.
Aye, St Helens, scum of the earth

I use a Visa card, lets not get hung up on the pre-paid bit.

I use the Natwide one because

    a) It gives a better rate than my Lloyds [1]
    b) It does not charge me a fee for foreign transactions [2]

No, I pre-pay money into a current account, that the debit card is then
    used against.

I can use the current account for direct debits, interbank transfers, SO
and many other things.... oh yes, it has a chq book as well.

Because it is a proper bank account

    [1] Lloyds was 1.11 and NatWide 1.15
    [2] a fucking quid per transaction !

Am I getting hung up on terms? Is a prepaid card = a debit card?

Yehbut when I swipe into a hotel:

    1. It doesn't debit my account
    2. It's generally used as a guarantee in case I **** off or destroy the
    place.

No. It's like a really pikey credit card that you pay the bill for before
    you spend the money.

Yes, but you need to keep it topped up or it fails. A credit card is
    simpler.
Equally true of the Nationwide Visa CC.

It also did it to my John Lewis Mastercard. I noticed yesterday approx
£150 of outstanding transactions. Today, that £150 had transpired into
about £40 of French fuel payments, with nothing now outstanding. I had
just assumed the difference was the amount reserved on the card.

I've just realised. This sub-thread started because you said

"The pumps at Asda have a sign on them saying Solo
users should spend at least 20 quid to avoid having an amount
    reserved"

and I questioned it. You were wrong, weren't you?
