Silly thought: are they aviation-grade? I have absolutely no
experience of trying this, but is it worth trying an aviation
supplier? Though that might not save you anything given the
certification requirements such bits are likely to have to fufill.

Ti flanged lock nuts aren't the most common fasteners. You'll prolly
pay a premium, no matter where you source them.

They aren't cheap, either, and I dunno if they sell retail, but they
    have tons of off-the-wall stuff.

  4. Wonder what the advantage is compared to a conventional lock nut.

The link says they 'distribute the pressure of the nut over the part
being secured reducing the chance of damage to the part..." I'm
struggling to understand why that is since surely the twelve points just
give more corners for the socket to get hold of?

Regarding where I'd get some, this crowd's normally pretty good
    http://www.averyknight.co.uk/
but I've never used their website.
    Any explanations?

I'm not bothered about any advantage, I just think they look nice...
