I never really "got" Frank Zappa - what little I've heard always came
    across as forced zaniness.

Listen to Joe's Garage Acts 1,2,3, and 'You are what you is' and "Them
    or us".
They're prolly the easist albums to listen to, classic songs, IMO
You either like him or ye don't ;-)

The live vid 'Does Humour Belong In Music' is superb. Unfortunately he
did so much stuff that you never know which albums to buy, especially as
some of his stuff really is shit.

    'If you're not careful,
    It'll stick to your cheeks
    You'll smell like a native
    For a couple of weeks
    In France'

France is like that, ye have to watch..

    They're mostly shit.

Listen to something like Apostrophe or Overnite Sensation. Or Sheik
Yerbouti if you want later stuff.
