Died of a heart attack apparently. Just as he was starting to get feeling and movement in his legs
    and fingers.

Lets hope plenty of others take up his fight for spinal research and funding.

This quote from the Age, including a quote from Miller is a classic ...

"Miller had the perfect answer when asked if he ever felt under pressure on
    the cricket field.

"Pressure, I'll tell you what pressure is,'' he said. "Pressure is a
Messerschmitt up your arse, playing cricket is not,'' he said in reference
    to his combat experience."

Yep, I reckon when you get that kind of operational stress, everything else
    becomes easy.

    Good quote.
Reminds me of Brian Smith, Parramatta coach that lost the 2001 Grand Final
after running hot all year. Asked if it was a tragedy he replied. No, a a
tragedy is when a plane flies through your office window and you don't get
to tell you wife you love her. This is just football.

A pretty big if. Would there be a GP at Phillip Island if Wayne Gardner
hadn't bought that $5 motorbike as a kid?
Not nice but I can understand the sentiment.

They were racing motorcycles at Phillip Island a long time before Gardner was
    born.

  9. Perhaps, but without Gardners involvement at GP level, nobody would have
given a **** about getting the GP to Australia. Before Gardner racing at
international level the GPs didn't really mean a thing here in OZ, he
started the popularisation that the Motorcyle GPs have had for the last
decade. And Phillip Island needed a shitload of money thrown at it to get
it up to standard back then, yes bikes raced there, but not these bikes.
Gardner was far more important to motorcycle racing in OZ at the time as he
got it up there in the first place, Doohan just kept the momentum up there.
Without Gardner being there at the start making the manufacturers look at
Aussie riders seriously, Doohan may not even have got the chance for a ride
in GP to begin with, lots of good riders didn't.

Hmmm, I don't know how accurate this is... a trickle of prominent Australian
riders has been a feature of GP's for a long time before Gardner came along.

Hansford on the factory Kawasakis, Tom Phillis, the guy who won Benelli's
last world championship in the late 60's, that other guy... you know, always
    wore a shirt...

Same for Alan Jones' participation in F1. And I'm not denigrating
Brabham's achievements. Back then live motorsport was very much a future
dream as far as television technology went.

It wasn't until Jones was making waves that Nein decided to broadcast the
    races "live".

So yeah, while we've had a lot of Australians who've done well overseas,
Jones and Gardner were the ones that pretty well put us on the map.

Yeah, Alan Jones... big fat **** with a big fat mouth. Let
fly with a "Women drivers" comment when Christine Gibson,
only female driver at Bathurst with factory backing since
like forever was unlucky enough to get caught up in that big
stack that stopped the race. Stupid big fat **** tried to
be all macho and make it sound like the stack was her fault
on national TV when she was just unlucky enough to one of
the first on the scene after it happened.

I don't give a shit what he did for anyone, the silly
fat prick lost every ounce of credibility he ever had
that day, and there *still* ain't any women driving in
    the ATCC or at Bathurst.

No way that fat loudmouthed prick deserves mention on the
same page as folks like Gardner and Brabbham, much less
in the same sentence. Fat loudmouthed **** did irrepairable
damage to Australian motorsport that day. Some people are
    just better off dead.

(It's better not to get me started on Jones! My inherent
politeness prevents me from saying what I really think,
but I'll still have a go!!!)

    Did Ajay ever race GPs?
I remember Rob Phillis doing a few as well as Jeff Sayle (heaps) and even
Mal Campbell raced a half-dozen or so.
Did Kenny Blake do many? I thought he just did races in the UK after he
    went OS.

She was directly involved in it. Bobby Morris lost it and took her out
with him. I was about 20 metres from where it happened, and nearly got
crushed as about 20 million half drunk spectators tried to use the fence
as a sieve and push me through it....
