    Don't you mean sailors?

    Thinking back to my formative years (when I actually listened to what
    I was being told) I had it explained to me that the incidence of ships
    breaking their backs increased after the majority of builders went
    over to welded construction rather than rivets because the amount of
    flex in the hull was reduced.

    That's a paragraph just waiting to be edited. Go for it.
