Obituary - an example to us all

  1. In today's Times, a bloody good obit of a bike racer and obvious
complete nutter, who has just pegged out aged 101.

never heard of the man, but I particularly liked:

"At l5 he passed his motorcycle driving test, with this advice from his
examiner: "The art of good motor cycle driving lies in keeping your
speed down." He proceeded to ignore it with a vengeance."

    And also:

"Just before his 22nd birthday, when riding his bike on ice, he skidded
and suffered a double skull fracture. He was in a coma for nine days,
and some papers were already publishing his obituary. But as soon as he
regained consciousness he discharged himself from hospital. He was being
driven home on a horsedrawn sleigh through heavy snow, when it capsized
and he sustained fresh head injuries."

They had big balls in those days.

  2. His name rings a bell from passing mention of 30s derring-do, but like
all those old geezers, I assumed he'd already croaked it.

  5. What's fishy about it? The bloke was born, rode some bikes and cars, had
some accidents, made a living then pegged it.

I think that the fuckwit is trying to say that driving tests weren't
introduced until much later than 1918.

    Quote taken from:

    http://uk.biz.yahoo.com/050601/17/fk6hk.html

    "Wednesday June 1, 03:00 AM
Seventy years of being put to the test

EXACTLY seventy years ago today a Mr J Beene handed over the princely
sum of seven shillings and sixpence (37½ pence), spent half an hour
driving around town under the supervision of an instructor and became
the first motorist in the UK to pass the driving
    test."

Here's a clue. Ernst Henne was born in Bavaria, raced BMWs in the
German championship, then raced Mercedes in the German championship,
then became one of Germany's biggest Mercedes dealers.

I doubt very much he tried to pass his bike test in Blighty.

I still think you're giving YammyRsole too much credit, btw.
