Odd things you see when driving/riding No. 2

On the M25 yesterday morning. A car at 90 degrees to the carriageway with
its front against the ARMCO. Nothing unusual in that. The odd thing was
that its rear axle was lying near it, completely detached from the car.
There was no obvious sign of major damage to the rear bodywork, which made
me wonder if it had simply fallen off.

I suppose if the car had drifted into the armco and the rear wheel caught
on a post or somesuch that may have torn the axle out without appearing
    to have wrecked the body.

Was it a live axle/rear beam or a diff and wishbone arrangement? I have
a picture of one of my Triumph 2000s with most of the rear
suspension/diff unit next to it on the trailer home from racing. ..but
it was a really rotten MOT failure.

Definitely a beam axle and no differential. The car was an old
1990s type mid-sized saloon but I wasn't able to ID it from my observation
    point. I'm guessing Citroen/Peugeot/Renault.

Was it a really dark colour? Almost, or even, black?
