I've been getting some strange effects with an external usb drive. One (newish) box sees it perfectly, the other can't see it in windows even after allocating a drive letter in system/drive manager then rebooting. Yet if you crank up a DOS command box on the old box you can see it and access it with those arcane old words like XCopy. Another answer in this case is to boot up another OS and mount it as a volume (assuming it can then be seen).
